Rating: Summary: Ugh! Review: Being a long-time Dean Koontz fan I was very disappointed with the plodding pace of this book. I've always prided myself on never starting a book I didn't finish--regardless of how bad it was. This may be my first. After reading a third of the book (and forcing myself to do even that, skip-reading and skimming much of the time) it has caught dust on my coffeetable for two weeks. Koontz has always been a very poetic writer, using lots of words to convey simple scenes. In the past this never bothered me. This time it did. As always, his golden retriever character is great--much more interesting than the humans.I hope I can pick this book up and finish it. I also hope it is worth the effort.
Rating: Summary: excitement at its best! Review: Although a bit drawn out in some places for DK, this book was wonderfully exciting and a bit scary. Things even tie up at the end. Kept me turning pages until I was done.Great Read!
Rating: Summary: Totally unbelievable Review: This is the first time that I have read a Dean Koontz book---believe it or not since he has written so many---and at first I was regretting that he had not been on my reading list previously. As I reached about the half way point of this long book (600+ pages), my view of the novel turned sharply from "an excellent read" to "a piece of trash". Koontz has used his excellent command of detail to provide much insight into his characters. He covers their family history, life experiences, interelationships, etc. However, the lives he has so described are not at all believable. He must have watched too much Captain Video and the Video Rangers in his youth since virtually all of his characters are either totally bad or totally good. What makes this book even more horrendous is that it can have a negative social impact since there are foolish people in the world who seek books like this to validate their sick conspiracy theories. Koontz is a talented man who should put his energies to more worthwhile and entertaining uses. Unfortunately, due to his name,he has probably made many millions from this piece of trash.
Rating: Summary: Took my mind off driving in a snowstorm.... terrifying Review: Four hours driving home in a snowstorm, and it went by in a flash listening to this tape. I was terror struck the whole time, and hardly noticed the snails pace of the drive. Dog lovers alert! Again, Mr, Koontz weaves a dog into the story. He has one line about dogs being so perfect that they are the reason God created the world. We are just here to feed, groom and love them. I couldn't agree more. I wish I knew Mr. Koontz. Anyone who feels that way about dogs must be a good guy. Even if he does have an absolutely terrifying imagination! Dean, please keep it up, and please hurry and finish Chrisotpher Snow's story (and his lovely dog).
Rating: Summary: Anticipation-Disappointment Review: For those of us who love "classic Koontz," we are willing to overlook and forgive much. By this I refer to formula plots, standardized characters, and being written to as if very thick headed persons needing step by step diagrams repeated regularly to allow us to grasp the storyline. We overlook this because we love the story. Koontz can tell an enthralling and heartstopping tale. This book, alas, is not one of those. It is boring, and that is unforgiveable. It actually took me two weeks to choke this down. I normally read a GOOD Koontz straight through in hours. I felt obligated to read it as I had paid for a copy. Get yours at the library.
Rating: Summary: Koontz Has Done It Again! Review: "This particular book was especially good escape reading. A real thriller. The writing was good. The plot was entertaining. The characters were colorful. She enjoyed it." Quoted directly from page 58 and it applies to False Memory, too!
Rating: Summary: False Memory Review: I'm a big Dean Koontz fan, but found this book not hitting the normal excellence of his other works. I normally set aside a block of time to read his books, knowing that I will be sucked in from the first page and not able to put it down. I was really disappointed that I was able to put this book down - several times. It's much more violent than his previous books and there is no supernatural twist in the plot. He attempts to make you think there a supernatural story line at one point, but quickly looses that story line. His characters are good, but could be more likeable. I finally got sucked in about 2/3 of the way through the book, but then it went downhill again. If you like dysfunctional families, violence and a non-supernatural story line, then I would recommend this book. I just hope his next book is up to his usual standards!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I had to write a review of this book as I could'nt believe some of the reviews. The story is very emotional in that it pulls at the heart strings. It kept me interested until the end. If I had a fault with the book it is that their was a bit too much meaningless prose. Also why does every Koontz novel have to be set in California? Plus why does there always have to be a dog? Why not a cat, hamster, budgie or something different. But all in all he tells a great story. This is a return to form after the dreadful fear nothing.
Rating: Summary: The Koontz Redemption Review: If you're a Dean Koontz fan, you've probably been disappointed over the last few years. After graduating from grinding out potboilers, Koontz matured into a reasonably good thriller writer in the late eighties; then, inexplicably, he began to write boring tales of mysterious little towns where little or nothing seemed to happen. Thankfully, his latest book, "False Memory" marks a break with this dreary trend. While it's marred by writing that is all too frequently florid, unlike other recent Koontz books--it IS exciting. The premise--which is developed far too tediously--is an interesting one once revealed. And the villain is both credible and fascinating. Once the book gets going, it is remarkably well-paced and suspense is sustained. Sadly, the ending is brought about via a "deus ex machina" device rather than the actions of the hero and heroine. This is unfortunate as this reader wanted to see how they would outwit their enemy rather than how they would benefit from good fortune. While "False Memory" is not one of Koontz' best books, it is his best in recent years. If you're a fan, this alone should prompt you to read and enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Buyers Beware Review: Wow, I must say, by the end of this book I could not put it down. I go to high School, and all my teachers were yelling at me too put my book down. well it had me riveted by the end, however, I noticed that DK is struggling with new ideas. The book started out slowly, I had to force myself to keep reading in the begining, However, I would recomend that any DK fan who has a litlle bit of Patience, should read This
