Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL! I LOVED IT! Review: Just a short one. I was hooked on King back in the seventies.I started with salem's lot, and have read every thing(but short stories, I don't like short stories)he has written. The thing I like best about stephen king is the way he builds stories(solid). This one will stand, a very long time. I agree, this is not a book for someone who is wanting "blood, gore, and imediate action". king is a storyteller! He climbs slow, but it is well worth the time.
Rating: Summary: It was the most riveting book I ever read Review: Insomnia is the type of book that changes everything and yet everything stays the same. You read and read until you think that you are going blind and then you read again. I loved the characters and the idea of a multi-leveled existence of the universe. Read the book.
Rating: Summary: The most BORING book ever! Review: Stephen King is one of my favourite authors. In fact, other than Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin, he's the only writer who's books I buy without any hesitation. Unfortunately, this was one of the times when it was a mistake to do so. This book was boring, plain and simple. To all you readers out there who have never checked out a King novel, don't start with this one. Try The Stand first. I'll continue to buy Kings books because they're King, but I hope Insomnia was just a fluke.
Rating: Summary: A favorite of the fantasy reader. Review: For the fantasy reader, Insomnia is one of the best books you will ever read. It combines King's modern day experiences and his indescribable talent for fantasy. Like most King books, there is some graphic and sexual content. This, however, manages to enhance the experience and make the book more enjoyable. Story is original and fairly easy to read. Plot is impossible to describe without quoting most of the book.
Rating: Summary: Having trouble sleeping? Don't read this book! Review: INSOMNIA-by Stephen King Are you looking for a quick read? Don't pick up this book. Insomnia, is a long and detailed book that needs to be read when you have a lot of extra time on your hands. Not only because it's long, but because it is one of Stephen King's best, once you start it, you have to finish it. In this tale of horror and mystery, Ralph Roberts and his wife Carolyn are happily married for many years. Ralph is around seventy-five years old, but he is active and enjoys exercising. In the past couple years he has found a love for walking a path with hills. Carolyn, is around seventy-two years old, and enjoys cooking and taking care of her husband. She always took care of everything that Ralph needed, until she couldn't do it anymore. In her early seventies, Carolyn is diagnosed with an incurable disease and is given a short amount of time to live. After Carolyn dies, Ralph has a hard time coping with the death of his wife. Eventually, he realizes that he is waking up earlier and earlier. What is happening to him? Why can't he sleep? Stephen King is absolutely brilliant in this book! He captures an element of fear that no other author has dared to write. Due to the fact that this book is long, this may cause a problem for people who have trouble with understanding long, drawn out paragraphs. This book is suspenseful, causing you to keep reading, making it one of his better works. I can't compare this unique plot to any other of his books, but I really felt what it's like to feel like you're going to die, through his vivid descriptions and haunting words. Because this is a book based on older men and women, it's probably easier for people of that age group to understand the situation that the protagonist is involved in. Additionally, a lot of this story is about the strength of love through marriage, and it's probably something that is difficult for teenagers to understand. Aside from the age difference between the characters and the reader, and the length of the book, this book is definitely something you should think about reading sometime in the future. Though it is a horror, there is an element of fear and mystery that intertwines with the horror that makes this read irresistible!
Rating: Summary: my favorite things... Review: As an avid King fan, I've read most of what he has to offer, but this is quite possibly my favorite. Derry, Maine keeps us up late at night once again. Scary, touching, and by turns even funny, King has blown me away on this one.
Rating: Summary: A perfect balance. Review: Alright, I'll admit it, I'm not a big Stephen King fan. I usually find his horror books too long (Bag Of Bones), simplistic (Salem's Lot) and too reliant on unneccesary gore (check out the ending to the Tommyknockers). However, Insomnia seems like a perfect balance between characterisation, plot and ideas. Ralph Roberts is not a happy man (although if you live in the little town of Derry, you're just asking for it). He's been losing sleep, you see. Not just a little either, as each fretful night shaves a few minutes off the previous night's total. No matter how many pills he takes and how many old folklore remedies he tries, he loses more and more sleep. Gradually he begins to notice colours - auras - in the air. Soon he realises that his sleep depravation isn't natural and someone - or something wants him to do its bidding. That is, if the little bald doctors don't find him first... Insomnia's biggest problem is that it has an unbearably slow start, as Ralph finds his neighbour Ed Deepnau acting a little oddly. However, stick with it and the plot picks up, with some of the best thought-out ideas seen in a novel for some time. The characterisation is superb too, as King creates a cast which you'll really feel for. Also, being a King book, there's an air of unpredictability about the plot and a feeling that not all of the characters will survive (which, incidentally, they don't). Despite some cynical plot-mixing with King's so-so Dark Tower series (that's the reference to the little boy's drawing of a cowboy, fact-fans), this is definitely King's most mature and intelligent book to date. Let's hope he can keep it up.
Rating: Summary: BORING! Review: I have read this book and I wonder if it is the same Stephen King who wrote The Tommyknockers or It, which I really enjoy. I totally agree with the criticisms written in this review and I don't understand how people can rate it with 5 stars... Maybe Stephen's got a big family! Sorry for my poor English, I'm French!
Rating: Summary: One of the best Stephen King novels I've encountered Review: When I selected this book to read I was expecting a typical King novel, but was pleasantly surprised to find a book on a completely different level. It is one of a few books that actually made me cry at the end. I intend to reread it often just to remind myself that things happen for a reason and that every choice you make in life has a consequence, be it good or bad.
Rating: Summary: Old folks Review: I may finish reading this book someday, but for now I give up. The main problem I have with it is that the old folks that are the primary characters of the plot don't talk or behave anything like the older folks I've known. This is a generalization but most old folks have lived through a lot of history and events and they like to talk about it, especially when they're with old friends. And most of them are set in their ways and have little patience for any disruptions. But Kings characters are decidedly youthful in attitude. I suppose the story lost my interest because these characters just don't have anything interesting to say. Which is unfortunate, because a person who's lived a long time should have an interesting story or two to relate. I ended up having a hard time distinguishing which character was which because none of them have any catchy personality traits. This is odd for king, who seems to have a sharp eye for the uniqueness of a character. Well, I may end up reading the rest of this book, and it may change my mind.
