Rating: Summary: Should be subtitled old people can be heros to. Review: Honestly, I think Stephen King ran out of ideas here. This has so many references to his other books it could be called a compilation. Not to mention the fact this suffers from the all to frequent problems King problem of confused endings. I am an avid King fan but was let down by this tale. If you are new to King start with Bag of Bones not this one it is likely to turn you off to King. I gave it two stars because while there are a lot of borrowed ideas from other books there are some orignal ideas here. I wish King had expanded on those ideas more instead of using the recycling bin.
Rating: Summary: Slow start, but picks up quickly Review: Oh...250 pages go by, as do several yawns and many stretch breaks. 275..HOLY $#!T...this is great!!! Stephen King breaks away from his usual routine ( nasty critters, people bein' mean to down on their luck people) and weaves a story full of fantasy, well-written charcters, suspense, and great imagery. The hero of our story, Ralph, can't sleep, but soon starts seeing auras and such. Soon, he starts seeing mean little bald dudes with sharp objects. It's cool. But it is nowhere on the par of the 1986 epic IT ( King's best) or THE STAND. However, if you swallow any boredom at the start, you won't regret it cuz this book gets really good. Get it.
Rating: Summary: slow in the beginning, great in the end Review: Insomnia started off as a very slow and boring book, so much in fact that I almost put it down. But I forced myself to finish it, and it was great! The only thing is that I dont think that senior citizens regularly swear at each other though. . .
Rating: Summary: SK pulls through again... Review: I have read Stephen King books before, but I have to say, "wow." This book was intense. I had the hardcover, bigprint version so the pages felt like they flowed faster, but even that can't account for the amazing style of King. True, there was more fantasy than horror, but believe me, it was good thing! This book offers a well-deserved rest from some the harder hitting SK novels. 800 pages was a little too much, and to me, the best, most beautifully twisted part of this book was within the last 200 pages. That said, I can still relate and see why King made a long book once again: This kind of story deserves something more than your average short story or novel. This story goes beyond horror, and talks of the idea of an "alternate reality", a hidden city existing within Derry, where the auras of people give away their inner thoughts, and their lifeline hangs delicately above them in the form of a balloon string. I must stop there, for there is much to be discovered in the world of Derry and the secret city existing within it. Like all SK, this book gets twisted, yet all comes back together in the end as any great, complex plot must always do. I highly recommend this book, but a few warnings: be ready for a lengthy novel, be reading for some mind-altering fantasy, and be ready to never sleep again...Welcome to Insomnia. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rating: Summary: Still sticks with me after reading it when it first came out Review: I thought this book was a fantastic work by Mr. King. I read this book 4 or 5 years ago when it first came out, and it still sticks with me as one of his most memorable. I prefer the King books that take your mind places you normally wouldn't make it to by your own imagination , versus his blood and gore and pure horror books. If you are a fan of King's less gorey books, you will definitely enjoy this one.
Rating: Summary: Unlike King. Review: This is a halfway decent book but it is probably the worst King book that I have read. The other king books that I have read have been very attention grabbing and good. But this one is rather boring. It is not recomended
Rating: Summary: Take him or leave him Review: It is so strange to me how some of his books make you stapled to your chair reading for days until you finish, and others are so dull your like why am I making myself finish this? Pet Cemetery, Cujo, Firestarter, Bag of Bones, Thinner, Misery, these were all absolutely spellbinding. On the other hand-The Shining, those Dark Tower series,The Dark Half, Dolores Claiborne (THE WORST)were really hard to get through. I'm a big fan because I started with Cujo and Pet Cemetery, but I can see how people who started out with like the Dark Half think the books are boring. I would put Insomnia along with Needful things somewhere in the middle-they had an interesting premise and some good points but were way to long for their own good. Anyone email me with other reccomendations, I haven't read all of them and would be interested in hearing what a next choice would be!
Rating: Summary: It just aint that good. Review: Stephen King's Insomnia is not his best book. It's not his worst either, it just aint that good. For one thing, IT'S TO DAMN LONG. I mean, instead of getting right to the point, King goes off on these long monolouges about what the weather is like and what colored shirt someone is wearing. I really don't care, get to the point. But I will defend the book in one aspect: People have been saying that the book is to far-fetched. C'mon, honsetly, when did Stephen King ever write anything that was realistic.
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment Review: I have long been a King fan, enjoying everything from Carrie to The Stand, The Shining, 'Salem's Lot, Misery, and Desperation. But this book was a real disappointment. Either King is going stale or his editors are afraid to edit him. His old geezer protagonists spout profanity like teenagers and have Baby Boomer sensibilities; completely unbelievable. This would be non-fatal if the story weren't so ridiculous. King usually produces suspense and chills; this thing was more like The Hardy Boys go to The Wizard of Oz. I mean, come on: Not even King can wow me by the introduction of a pair of singing sneakers. Think about it -- singing tennis shoes!!!
Rating: Summary: Scary & Strange--Definitely A Late Night Page Turner Review: This is the most interesting book King has written since The Langoliers. Except for the pointless, obligatory gross-out gore, this story about an elderly man whose exhaustion from insomnia lends him psychic abilities with which to fight the personified agents of death is a good fright and a good read.
