Summary: Sampler Lover's Dream
Review: Beautiful examples of traditional samplers with patterns and historical background descriptions. Chapters cover important topics such as "Symbols and Verses", "Making a Sampler", and "Stitches". The projects are well laid out and easy to read. A fantastic book to add to any needleworker's library!! Color photos as well as black and white. Much to absorb!! Wonderful book!!!

Summary: History Revealed
Review: If you've ever wondered the history behind cross-stitch samplers, you must read this book, not just glance at the design charts.

Sarah Don vividly describes the history behind this particular type of needlecraft by era and area detailing our past social problems and successes in a heart-rendering but exposing light.
You'll never look at a sampler the same way again.

The book makes an excellent reference guide for those who want to add historical flavoring to their design work. My only disappointment was that the pictures of historical works were black and white and the patterns given seem fairly outdated now.
