Rating: Summary: Helpful for Beginners Review: As an active 4-H member and rabbit owner, I have heard many stories about parents that buy their children rabbits without any real knowledge of the animal. These parents figure that the rabbit makes for an ideal Easter or birthday gift, but what they don't know is that the rabbit has many needs that will need to be met. Unfortunately, many of these animals end up neglected and/or malnourished, and they are sometimes given to a "rabbit rescue" or humane society when the child loses complete interest and the parents are unable to meet the needs of the rabbit. All of these things could be prevented, however, if the parents would have read a book such as "Your First Rabbit" and talked to their children about the responsibilities of raising a rabbit before they made the purchase of the animal."Your First Rabbit" will tell you everything you need to know to get started in taking care of the rabbit. It will discuss the breeds of rabbits that might be appropriate for your situation and provide a brief history of the rabbit. It will also explain how to care for the rabbit and provide the warning signs from some common rabbit diseases such as ear canker and sore hocks. Finally, the book tells you how to check the sex and breed your rabbits, although I recommend purchasing an in-depth guide such as "The Rabbit Handbook" if the rabbit is going to be used for breeding purposes. In conclusion, "Your First Rabbit" is an essential tool for both adults and children interested in getting a rabbit as a pet. I must stress that it is essential for potential rabbit owners to read a book such as this before purchasing a rabbit! Knowledge is not only the key to a happy, healthy animal, but also to a more enjoyable experience in rabbit raising.
