Review: This book is very well illustrated with lots of useful information on type, song, and color canaries. In addition, it is an invaluable resource which deals with finches representing the CARDUELIDAE finches (canaries, serins, goldfinches, siskins, seedeaters, and rosefinches), the EMBERIZIDAE finches (buntings and finch-buntings), the THRAUPIDAE finches (grosbeaks, tanagers, and cardinals), and the ALAUDIDAE finches (larks). Although some of these species are not available to American aviculturalists, the book makes for interesting reading. The information contained in it is reliable and is encyclopedic in extent. In addition to general care sections on canaries and finches, each variety or species is explained in detail with sections on description, origin and habits, keeping, breeding, and feeding. The only criticism is that this very readable translation from the German retains the German enthusiasm for capitalization of the common names of species.
