Summary: Research ONLY
Review: I have read many books by Stratton, Semencic, and Jessup among others. I also have extensive personal experience with the breed and years of research under my belt. I respect Stratton. His work is widely read and well known, and he was one of the first and best authors on the pit bulldog.

However, I disagree strongly with many of his out-of-date views, including that of pit fighting. I also feel that there are many other ways of testing gameness that don't require rolling or other illegal activites. There's no reason why the pit bull can't continue to be a great dog with all the qualities we love, without engaging in a cruel practice like pit fighting. We're not in the 1800's anymore.

It is dangerous to the breed's continuation to publish a book with a lunging dog on the cover. It is dangerous to the breed to gloat about all the illegal things that pit bulls are good at. This book, in the hands of the media, an ignorant owner, a pit bull hater, or a cruel individual, is very detrimental to the breed.

I believe this book should be read for research purposes only. It is not a good resource for pet pit owners, pit bull supporters, and those trying to work against the breed's negative public image.

Summary: Stratton Knows
Review: I purchased this book for the first time about 16 years ago, when my first pitbull was merely a puppy. I HAVE to say that Stratton KNOWS. For people who think "the modern pitbull enthusiasts" would not enjoy this book, they need to understand and READ THE WORDS in the book. These dogs were bred for a specific purpose and people who understand also understand that Stratton focuses on this. Beautiful book, awesome insight and pictures that brought a tear to my eye. You can't go wrong with this book if you UNDERSTAND THE BREED and don't want to turn the american pitbull terrier into a lap dog! Pick it up!

Summary: Justice for a misunderstood warrior
Review: I read the book when my wife brought it home from the local library. I could not believe my eyes. This book is very informative and truthful. I haven't found an author who presents the game pit bull so thoroughly. When I go to buy a Pit Bull book I look for Richard Stratton's work.

Summary: Lots of good info on where the breed came from
Review: I read this book when it first came to my local library, and I was very happy with the contents, and while I do not personally agree wish to ever fight my dogs, I also realise that dog fighting is how the APBT came to be, and without game testing of the breed, the breed will never be the same.
I am surprised to see how many people with ignorant and inexperienced attitudes, have bothered to fill these reviews with whiny, mamby-pamby meanderings about how horrible the author is for supporting game testing, and the complaints of old photos? C'mon people, dog fighting is illegal HELLO! Who would let a recent pic of themselves fighting dogs be published?
Comments about it being "all the owner", are as intelligent as blaming the parent when a child goes wrong. Yes sometimes it is the owner, but just as often, a poorly bred dog from untested stock, will be the originator of its own demise. These same people who claim to love the breed and condemn fighting, are hypocrits firstly, and secondly, are the same ones who breed for size and color, rather than for temperment, tenancity, loyalty, and intelligence. These are the people destroying the breed. Truly, how many times have you heard a dog owner brag about the weight of their dog or the color of its nose? Pit bulls are not meant to be 100 pounders nor are they meant to be lap dogs. Pit bulls would do anything for love of their master, that is why they are the only REAL dog.
Mr. Stratton covered the history of the dog well, and does dog men of justice with his admiration of their way of life.
question: If dog fighting is illegal because of animal cruelty, why are rodeos a legal and family form of entertainment?

Summary: A custom fit breed book for a uniqe dog
Review: Richard Stratton is a real author as well as a person interested in a certian breed. The book reads well cover to cover with 100 plus pictures to reflect upon long after your done with the reading.

Summary: A shame to all Pit owners
Review: This book not only has pit fighting rules from the 70's, but the photos are dull and even the few color ones aren't quality. This is the book for you if you are the type that likes to sit on your grandpa's lap and hear his ol' Pit stories. Even die-hard dog breeders couldn't use this in there arsenal of books. Don't waste you money on this one.

Summary: NOT A BOOK FOR PET PIT BULL OWNERS!!!!!!
Review: This is a great book if you want to learn more about dog fighting and the abilities of pitt bulls in such competitions. You just need to see the cover to figure this out. If you are looking for general information of the breed this book is not very helpful. This books clearly describes the fighting background of this great breed and how it has develop to what we know today as the APBT
