Summary: Excellent and thorough
Review: I am definitely not an expert when it comes to house plants but this book has been of real value to me. It is very thorough yet easy to understand and loaded with colour pictures so if you are not too sure what plants you do have you will surely find them in this book and learn how to look after them.
Definitely a must have for home or plant pot gardeners

Summary: A must have!
Review: I have many houseplant books - this one was the first I ever bought & the first in the stack I refer to most often. It lists both the common & latin names, gives wonderful information on lighting, temperature, water, humidity & propigation of each species. The back of the book has many pages devoted to parasites & diseases and cures. The beginning of the book discusses "The 10 Golden Rules" of keeping house plants, how to choose the right plant, containers, placement & many other basic tips (great for beginners). There is a chart to help you identify what plant you have. Overall its a great book for the novice & expert!

Summary: best houseplant book around. period.
Review: I have quite a few books to help with houseplants, but this is the one that consistently has the information I need. Besides great content, the look of the book is very attractive .... sort of like the USA Today of plant books -- LOTS of pictures, photographs and charts. It seems that every topic under the sun is covered, from choosing and caring for a wide variety of plants to displaying them in all manner of rooms. Plant care instructions for each species are only about a third of a page but there is a lot of information packed into that space -- a photo, description and temperature, light, water, humidity, repotting and propagation facts. There is also a section about troubles and pests as well as a dictionary and index. An essential resource.

Summary: A must have for any plant lover
Review: I used to ALWAYS kill plants . .. until I got this book! It is so helpful with it's colored photos and easy plant care tips. It's perfect for the beginner (and for the advanced too). I'm not afraid to buy a new plant now. I'd recommend this book to anyone starting up their own "indoor garden".

Summary: New Green Thumb
Review: I was very pleased with the amount of information this book provided. I have never had luck with house plants before. The information provided here helped me to make intelligent selections for the climate and light I could provide. The book provides a brief, but information packed 1/3 - 1 page on each plant including 'secrets of success' (temperture, light, water, air humidity, repotting and propagaion) and a list of remedies for special problems. I was able to take the book with me to the nursery to make sure I was making wise choices. I would recommend this book to anyone with questions of care on house plants.

Summary: If only I'd known...
Review: If only I'd known that this was one of those books they have lined up at home depot or cashway...full of bits of information for those who really don't know anything, but not really that useful...I would have passed. I admit that I now refer to it occasionally, when I can't find a plant pictured elsewhere or to get a name to reference in another book, but normally it just sits on the shelf. It seems outdated, the pictures are of poor quality, and there's not really enough information about each plant to be that useful to me.

Summary: The perfect general purpose house plant book
Review: Other reviewers described the different book sections, so I won't. I love this book! I find the book perfect for the following uses:

- I am sometimes given plants as gifts. I use the book to identify the plant, decide where to put it, and how to care for it.

- I move frequently, and take plants with me if I can. The book helps me find the right spot for each plant in each new home, and helps me adapt the plant's care to the new environment. I re-read the book today to decide what kind of plants to put in which rooms of my next house.

- The book describes how to coax blooms from holiday plants (eg. Christmas cactus, poinsettias)from year to year.

- My husband has taken up cacti gardening. He used this book to get started.

This book is a general house plant book; it is not a huge scientific book detailing each individual plant species and subspecies. But it's just about right for what I need.

I am so impressed with this book, I'm planning to buy more from the author's series.

Summary: A Necessary House Plant Reference Book.
Review: There must be an extraordinary number of house plant books, and while many of those are well worth the time, some are required in your library. It's nonsense to dismiss any such resource-guide as worthless if it does not excel in this or that: it's often wise to relay on a variety of such books so that you can compare information.

That all said, this is sure to be a staple in many bookcases, because it offers comprehensive and concise information regarding plant identification, basic growth necessities per plant (lighting, water, humidity, soil) or even plant groups (such as Succulents or Philodendrons, one of my favorites). The range of material is varied and includes all well-known and lesser-known plants that'll do well in your house or greenhouse (or even terrarium, which I do recommend, by the way).

Furthermore, there are additional chapters on for example diseases and what to do about them, displaying indoor plants, etc.. Inside these chapters can be found a wealth of information for beginners and experts alike. But what defines beginner or expert I'll leave to others.

The House Plant Expert even offers golden rules ... each his/her own rules, but you won't hear me arguing with these.

Anyway, for people growing tropical plants, I found out that they adore frequent misting, diffused sunlight, high humidity, company of each other, and room to grow (watch out for Monstera Deliciosa, that one goes fast and all over the place). And do invest in the right soil types; that makes a difference.

Good luck.

This book deserves to be one of the best-sellers on house plants because with its excellent selection of plants common to many countries and its clear, invaluable information it simply is an essential resource for anyone, whether beginner or professional, who wishes to grow and keep beautiful house plants. I assure you that it's a book you will refer to time after time after time.

Summary: The price of the book
Review: This is an excellent book yet someone who lives in the Russian speaking countries do not need this book because there is the good interpretation of the "Expert Series" in Russian and those russian editions much more cheaper
