Summary: old school
Review: Before when there were no other protection training books many people read this book since there were no other. Now there are more better methods on training. It would be best if they removed the books off the shelves. Koehler needs to get into the the 21st century and republish this book.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Completly outdated
Review: Do not buy this book, the information here is too old. If you really want to learn something take a look at Ed Frawleys videos and then search for an author that deals with solid and modern techniques. I got this book a long time ago and now that I train dogs for a living I know that I wasted my money.

Summary: Did you really read the book
Review: I have trained three of the happiest dogs around using the Koehler method. I can tell that many of the negative comments are from folks who didn't bother to read the whole book. I see the results of all the new methods of dog training every day in my town. Without a leash those dogs lives would be in danger. The Koehler method will provide a method of off leash obedience that you can really count on when things get scary. Thus insuring a long life for the dog you love. There is hard scientific proof that the Koehler method creates a calm and relaxed dog that can go with you anywhere and will always be welcome. Having read the whole book and used it, I can give it my highest recommendation.

Summary: old school
Review: I run a very large training school and have been training dogs for over 20 years. The methods outlined in Koehler's books are 40 years out of date. Training has changed, and nobody needs to hurt their dog and call it dog training.

This author recommends "correcting" digging by filling the hole with water and holding the dog's head under "until he's sure he's going to die", and doing this for several days in succession. He recommends "corrections" that include hanging the dog on a choke chain with his feet off the ground, and chides the "soft" owner who may then feel sorry for the dog that vomits and collapses. He recommends such dangerous techniques as duct-taping a chewed object into a dog's mouth for *days* to punish chewing. He recommends threading a dowel through a rubber hose and hitting the dog with it for up to 20 minutes to "correct" some problems..... and on, and on.

Positive dog training is now the standard for dog trainers all over the world. He may have been the only game in town 30 years ago, but now we have better techniques and options that are very successful and build a better bond than one based on fear and force.

Please read "Positive Puppy Training Works" by Joel Walton, or "The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller, or any of a myriad of other excellent positive training books out there.

Summary: Two-in-one book of dog training
Review: I'm a professional dog trainer, training dogs mostly for obedience and occasionally for protection work. I found Mr. Koehler's dog book a rare book of so many straight-forward, no nonsense very effective methods of dog training. His throw-chain method is, I think the signature part of his obedience training. He is one of the best I guess. I rate his book 5 star. If you want a fast, effective, and long lasting dog training, try his book. You'll be thankful you did.

Summary: Sensible method
Review: Kohler, late chief trainer at Disney, gives instruction in obedience training first, then a discussion of why NOT to attack-train, only then advanced instruction. He warns that the dog must be chosen carefully; tells exactly how to choose. Gives warnings of the consequences, to animal and trainer, of abuse. (Trainer must be smarter than dog for these methods or any others to be effective.) He recommends a privately-owned dog be left to decide its own agression level. I've used his methods with 5 rescued dogs (1 stray) - 5 happy pets, none shy, none crazy.

Summary: What is old becomes new again...
Review: Many of Koehler's methods are used still today by leading protection dog trainers around the world, and I have seen them work first hand on many dogs.

Whether or not you agree with Koehler's principles or not is a personal choice, but one thing is clear - THE METHODS IN THIS BOOK WORK QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY TO PRODUCE LASTING AND RELIABLE RESULTS.

Summary: What is old becomes new again...
Review: Many people would contend that some of Koehler's methods, as outlined in this book, are 'cruel' or 'inhumane'. I have a different opinion to that, as do the vast majority of protection/obedience dog trainers that I have spoken to.

A dog does not have the ability to reason, and Koehler's methods show the dog clear consequences for its actions. Let's put this into human terms...

... ...

Koehler's methods show a dog exactly that - a clear choice. If the dog does what it knows how to, and is capable of, doing, then it is rewarded for this. If the dog knows, and is capable of, doing a task, yet CHOOSES not to, then it is punished for this.

Koehler's methods make the choice for the dog simple - perform the behaviour desired by the handler and I will be rewarded, NOT perform and I will be punished AND not get a reward.

Many of Koehler's methods are used still today by leading protection dog trainers around the world, and I have seen them work first hand on hundreds of dogs.

Whether or not you agree with Koehler's principles or not is a personal choice, but one thing is clear - THE METHODS IN THIS BOOK WORK QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY TO PRODUCE LASTING AND RELIABLE RESULTS.

Summary: A dog trainers opinion
Review: The methods of Koehler are cruel and unusual. No one should use any of his techniques. His books are just an excuse for his sadism. This is not how you train a dog... this is how you abuse a dog.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: A very cruel method of dog training
Review: This book has some very cruel methods of training a dog. Dogs should not be fearful when being trained and treated with cruelty. The ASPCA should be informed of these people.

Sorry, but I would not recommend this method of training at all!
