Summary: Helpful information for the student cabinetmaker.
Review: I am a beginning cabinetmaking student at a local community and technical college in Minneapolis. I'm also one of those people who feels ill prepared for an undertaking unless I've read at least one book on the project. This is particularly true with my present undertaking, because I have never used power tools in the past and feel sort of all-at-sea!

Because I hope to set up my own shop, I have been researching the types of equipment that I will need to do that, in this case the table saw. I looked for a book that could not only give me advice on what to purchase for my particular needs, but how to use it safely, how to care for it, and what types of spacial arrangements would be best in housing and using it. The Table Saw Book provides that information in a clear, well-organized and well illustrated manner.

It begins, logically, at the beginning, describing the anatomy of the machine, both externally and internally, listing the parts and discussing their purpose. It also includes a chapter specifically dedicated to blades: their types, uses, and maintenance.

There is a section on dust collection and the pros and cons of different styles. This is something of importance in my case, as I expect to set up my first shop in the basement and my house has forced air heating. I have already looked at some of the equipment that is available on Amazon to control the dust, and am planning a dust collecting system. (I've even thought of putting in a household vacuum system also).

The chapter on adjustment and maintenance of the saw helped to reinforce classroom learning in the former case and provides an important reference in the latter case when I am faced with care of my own equipment with no instructor around to advise me! I hope to have a complete reference library for trouble shooting all of my equipment, and this represents my first addition to that collection!

Sections on ripping, cross-cutting, the use of jigs and joinery on the table saw were very informative. I expect that my first purchase-and probably the only one for a while-- will be a table saw, and I will have to become proficient in its full range of usage if I wish to do much work before I am able to get any other equipment.. This volume and The Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery by Gary Rogowski should help me do that.

Summary: Good Book...
Review: I haven't seen the video, but I got this book and several others at my local library's yearly book sale. I would buy this book again, even at full retail. I find the authors writing style very straight forward and easy to understand and the book is layed out in a very logical and clear format. Combined with Jim Tolpin's "Table Saw Magic", I can pretty much accomplish anything with my table saw. I would reccommend this book to everyone who uses a table saw.

Summary: Clear and to the point, but enough about the Euro saws!
Review: I was a self-started on the table saw. I took-off and learned as I went. That is, I learned every nasty, unsafe method possible. I was not a smart worker but didn't know it. That's where Mr. Mehler came in. Not only does his book instruct the reader how to cut cleaner and be more productive, he pushes safety all through the book. Because of Kelly (can I call him Kelly?), I have a cross-cut sled, a zero-tolerant throat plate, and two grip-tites. I have not taken another single kick-back to the head or lost another finger in over a year!

Summary: Great for a brand new woodworker
Review: I'm bought this book based on several recommendations from other woodworkers. I'm very happy now that I have. It covers a lot of ground that is probably "common sense" to a seasoned woodworker, but to a beginner is priceless information. Some of the area's that were important to me are the safety portion and the table-saw setup. I've recently purchased a table-saw and now I feel I have enough knowledge to get it setup and tuned up properly, and how to use it safely.

I definately recommend it to novice woodworkers.

Summary: Excellent Book for a Beginner - And Fun To Read Too
Review: If you are a beginner - this is an excellent book to start. It describes different kinds of saws: portable, contractor, cabinet, etc. It also pays attention to important subjects such as safety, dust collection, blades and simple jig setup.
The book provides a good description of a host of valuable accessories that you might want to either make or buy. In addition, a resource section with a list of the more popular manufacturers proved to be very useful.
The author spent time and effort to write a book that is appealing to anybody interested in table saws, regardless of whether you are planning to spend $5,000 on your saw or $500.

Summary: The Table Saw Book
Review: Kelly Mehler has a clear, concise writing style that is both informative and easy to understand. The book covers a fair amount of territory in word and uses pictures well. Topics range from table saw anatomy to jigs and fixtures for expanding the utility of this tool that has become the center of many a workshop. Now that I've read the book and used it's advice on setting up my new table saw it will become a valued reference for the future.

Summary: If you read only one book on table saws, this should be it!
Review: Kelly Mehler is a master builder of fine, museum quality furniture. He has been working wood for 27 years, and his one-of-a-kind pieces are collectors items. As a teacher, he is remendously generous with his talents and his help to the amateur woodworker, and this book is a classic example of his style: no-frills, easy-to understand, and non-threatening. This book gives a sense that you can do the task, no matter how daunted you are by it. It is as thorough and well-produced as his two videos, which I am constantly reviewing for technique and procedural questions. I'm telling you, this is the book to buy if you want THE handbook on table saw use, and the videos will become your touchtones for reference and encouragement. Above all else, Mehler respects and loves wood and woodworking, and it comes through in his work, the pieces he builds, the classes he teaches, the videos, and this book. YOU CAN'T MISS WITH THIS ONE.
