Summary: A great read
Review: After finishing "The manicured coffin" by L.Kathy. Hutchins, I was hoping to go on to something a little less horrific. I go through phases when it comes to choosing books. Sometimes I like to read biographies about serial killers, and other times, I like to read from the Bible or Nexus, which is a bi-annual conspiracy magazine that you can only buy in health stores. I guess you could call me a man of diverse tastes. Which is exactly why I was so attracted to Carol's book. Written in the first person, the book chorincles the brief and scattered life of a protagonist that is never identified. Her only communication with the outside world is mired in a complex web of textile slang and needle jargon. At first read, the book seems obtuse, and as a traditionalist, I was originally put off by it's unfamiliar technique of blurring what is fiction and what is an handicrafts manual. But after perservering, I found the plot to be multi-faceted and only in post analysis did the layers of story unfold. Much like a prize winning angora diamond stitch quilt, this book will wrap you up and leave you feeling warm and cosy inside.

Summary: Great for the beginner!
Review: As a complete novice to quilting I'm finding this book to be a great reference and learning tool. It talks in normal language and is easily understandable. The pictures and explanations make you feel as if you can accomplish and learning this daunting hobby! I'm glad I bought it!

Summary: AN ABSOLUTE MUST
Review: Don't miss out on this book. This is a must to have for beginners as well as quilters who are already in the process of some projects. It is wonderful and clear. No guess work and it provides STEP by STEP instruction to all the projects inside. I am so glad that I got this book. It helped me with so many questions and gave me tips and tricks on how to better and faster work on my projects.

Summary: Gave me courage to try!
Review: I had sewed clothing years ago and attended a 1-day beginning machine quilting class but still didn't feel very confident. We didn't do any piecing at all in the class, and I really didn't know where to begin with a "real" project. I really wanted to make a baby quilt for two close friends but was afraid to start. This book came to the rescue! After skimming through the book I learned about how to calculate fabric requirements. I learned how to use a rotary cutter properly to cut straight on the grain of the fabric, and got great tips for cutting and piecing quickly. I refered to the book numerous times for guidance while putting together a baby quilt pattern I found on the Internet, and then used a pattern from the book to create a quilted pillow for a Christmas gift for my Mom. The book has great tips for everything from what you need to get started to creating your own bias or straight-grain binding strips and putting that final touch on your first project! I will probably make many of the projects given within the book, although I must say I wasn't fond of the fabric choices in the color photos; I used VERY different choices in my own projects and was extraordinarily pleased with how the patterns came together. If you have ever wanted to know more about quilting and are thinking about taking the plunge, this is the book for you.

Summary: Great Beginner Book
Review: I have just begun to learn to quilt. This book gives all the basics and then some. I like the plain language and diagrams and pictures that help with the explanations. Quilting terms are explained well and there is a list of tools used in quilting. I especially liked the page that showed the different elements of a quilt. Sure makes more sense to me after reading this. Excellent reference! I think this is a book that I will refer back to many times, no matter how advanced my quilting gets.

Summary: I couldn't even sew, but I made my first quilt!
Review: I have never learned to sew. Well, not really. I have hemmed my pants and reattached my buttons, but that was my entire sewing repertoire before I got a wild idea to start quilting. I bought three different books, all of which were helpful in their own ways, but this book made it possible to start and complete my own project. It has everything from quilting vocabulary musts and the necessary tools to stitching techniques. I can't say enough good things about it!

Summary: HIGHLY RECOMMEND Your First Quilt Book
Review: I puchased this book when it was first published. I had been quilting for 5 years at that time. I still learned new ideas. Carol Doak has been quilting/teaching for a long time and that shows (I've taken several classes with her).

Summary: Simple and Practical.
Review: This is a perfect first-timer book for the beginning quilter.
It gently and easily instructs without the
overwhelming and sometimes intimidating effect
I have seen in other books.
It continues to serve as a great reference.

Summary: Highly Recommended!!
Review: This is definitely a great book for the beginning quilter. I had never sewn much of anything and knew very little about quilting but one day I just decided I wanted to learn to quilt. I bought this book and found it extremely understandable. The author defines terms and explains all the tools needed. I am finishing my first quilt now and I have been getting lots of compliments on it.

Summary: Well, maybe.
Review: This was good reading; it gave good advice for useful techniques and notions. But it did not really inspire you to quilt anything. I don't know if it would inspire anyone else. Quilting takes a big chunk of time, so I find it hard to get going on one. This book wouldn't do it, for me or a friend who is trying to get herself restarted after many years. The information is sound, thorough, but well, dry.
