Rating: Summary: Great for wannabe-knitters! Review: I decided to take up knitting, and wanted a good basic book that would answer my questions and get me started, and is this ever it! It builds upon itself, so I never felt overwhelmed by all the information it provides. It describes the supplies needed, the basic steps needed to get started, how to read the knitting instructions, how to correct errors like a dropped stitch, and goes on to describe more difficult techniques and how to design and finish your own projects. It has great photographs and drawings throughout that clearly illustrate the directions. I got some inexpensive yarn and sat down and worked my way through the instructions, and by the time I got through the chapter about fixing mistakes, I was ready to start buying easy knitting patterns. I am always referring back to my book now while I am knitting things. I thought this book was rather expensive at first, but now I realize it's priceless!
Rating: Summary: Probably one of the best knitting references out there Review: This is a great knitting reference because it has most techniques, from circular knitting on double point or circular needles, to fair isle color, to mosaic knitting (colorwork on garter stitch--very pretty textural color.) There is attention to measurements, style, how to do your own garments. The pictures are large and lavish--Vogue has great photographers and artists contributing to this book. It's attractive, and encylopedic. If you are new to knitting or want to advance your skill, this is really a great reference book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for beginners as well as for reference Review: This book should be renamed " textbook of knitting" It's got everything you would want to know about knitting. There's "recipies" for cables along with pictures, there's explanations on mosaic, fair isle and other kinds of pattern and color knitting. Everything is explained beautifully and the diagrams are well done. The project chapter is great, it explains how to take measurements, design and make just about any kind of sweater you'd like. It explains circular and double point knitting as well. They didn't have hat or glove patterns, but who cares, you can find books about those anywhere. This one is strictly educational and inspiring!
Rating: Summary: cable errors only a misunderstanding Review: Someone reviewed this book saying the cable directions are in error. I believe the reviewer may have misunderstood a standard convention of knitting patterns. You can pretty much trust this book....
Rating: Summary: errors, errors! Review: an excellent book on technique, but id like to point out that the entire cable knitting section in the stitch dictionary is wrong: everything that says "knit all knit stitches and purl all purl stiches" should be the opposite "purl all knit and knit all purl" on the reverse sides to make stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch. i had a puzzling evening trying to make the big cable: follow the charts, they are written out correctly. otherwise, a handy book.
Rating: Summary: Everything you've wanted to know is in here... Review: I started knitting about six months ago with a simple scarf, working my way up to circular knitting hats and mittens. This book has provided clear explanations for each one of my projects, including the cable knitting project I have just started. It also has a whole section in the back that shows you how to develop your own patterns. Very cool. Great for any knitter-beginner to advanced.
Rating: Summary: This is THE definitive reference book on knitting. Review: Having owned the previous edition to the same book, I went ahead and spent the extra money and gifted my old copy of this exquisite book to a friend. Why? It's so elegant and modern, I just couldn't resist. As always the information is so comprehensive and easy to understand, and this book is among the must-haves for any knitter, especially those from beginning and intermediate levels. As well, if you are looking for a book for a friend of yours that knits, and are unsure as to what to buy for them, unless they have this book already, it is one that even master teachers both own and prefer their students buy. Videotapes that show actual knitting in action cannot compare to the descriptions and diagrams in this book. No matter what style of knitting you are able to do, the book covers it. Pick, toss, it's all inside, and so beautiful.
Rating: Summary: visually striking, comprehensive content has some problems Review: this book is visually striking, with excellent photos and illustrations. content is quite comprehensive and i value the book for that alone, despite the frustration i experienced with charting typos and the difficulty of finding information. BEWARE: there are a lot of typos in the stitch dictionary ! the indexing is poor: instead of one master index at the back of the book, there are "mini-indices" at the bottom of many pages. this is an interesting and potentially useful technique, but not a substitute for a good master index. likewise, the table of contents is anemic, supplying only the chapter titles. you have to go to the chapter in question to find a listing of the topics covered there. finally, the organization is rather odd, something i might not have noticed so much had the indexing or table of contents been better. this is a reference for people who already have an idea of what they're doing, not really an instruction manual. for better charted patterns and stitch dictionaries, try one of barbara walker's books. begining knitters might have more positive experiences with other books.
Rating: Summary: Same as previous Vogue Knitting just new patterns Review: This book is the Absolute Bible in knitting! I recommend it for all of my beginning students. They are amazed at how much of what they learn is in the book and so much more. One student bought the book several weeks after our first class and she was trying things on her own that she had seen in book. It's the exact same book as the previous Vogue Knitting book, it just has updated patterns in the back. The patterns aren't beginner's patterns, much like the ones in the previous book weren't. For a great reference book, you can't beat the Vogue Knitting book. If you find a previous edition used and cheaper than this one new, pick it up and you'll wonder how you got along without this book.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: I have not been able to purchase this book yet (it has been discontinued at this time). I got a copy from the local library. It looks great. I think it has all of the stitches explained in this book. I look forward to getting this book for myself. I am a novice at knitting, and I think I can learn ALOT with this book. It explains everything. If you need to know, this book will teach you.
