Rating: Summary: How great it is! A must buy and you won't put it down Review: Tricia has done it in a whole new style. This book took the information of solid training books and put it into an easy read with wonderful insights that sterile training books miss.
This would be a great book for getting started before getting the dog and a must read for anyone who already has a dog. It was packed full of training help with great stories that helped explain it to the newbies who haven't seen it all. For those who have seen it all this book brings it home again with delightful stories and a humour rarely seen in dog training books.
Rating: Summary: Dogs and Owners Review: This book has a lot of information about dogs and a lot of information about owners. This book comes before a training (obedience) book (if possible) and even before the dog (it has some of the wisest information about dog selection that I've seen). If you have either a training book or a dog or both you should definity read it anyway.
It is fairly easy to read but it is very heavy on "behavior". Behavior about dogs and humans primarily, but also about primates and even other species. If you are not into behavior you probably will not like this book. It is more narrative than a lecture. Many times it reads like a novel. In some sections it can be emotional.
I agree that I has some flaws and they can be annoying. The author does overdue her PhD story and primate behavior sometimes seems repetative and forced. In spite of these flaws I strongly recommend that you read it if you like dogs or are curious about dogs.
Rating: Summary: The book is OK-if you have a dog that's just a dog Review: This book is ok if you have a dog that's just a dog and not a member of your family. Although I spent a lot of time training my dog, i also treat him like a child, taking him with me everywhere I can, including vacations. The author of this book really focuses on problematic dogs, so if you have a dog that has some serious issues, like aggression, read this book. However, if you have a dog that just needs some training, I would not recommend this book. It is not easy to read, there is no sequence to the chapters, there is no "here is what you need to do to get your dog to ...." Perhaps this book is for a more advanced dog trainer.
