Rating: Summary: Very intersting and helpful! Review: I found this book to be informative and entertaining. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of getting a dog or who already has a dog. Even if you already know alot about dogs you are bound to pick up some interesting tidbits!
Rating: Summary: a Masterpiece!!! Review: This is a book that needs to belong in the library of every dog lover who truly wants to understand the behavior of his/her dog. This is not a training manual. But I suspect it should be required reading for anyone wishing to better understand and train their dog. Please be open minded when you read this book and throw away the traditional WWII era thinking about dog training and behavior. Patricia truly cares about dogs and it is clear in every page of this book. Buy this book, read it, and read it again. It will open your eyes and heart to a new loving relationship with your dog. Every chapter is full of valuable information you should not be without. The chapters about body language (of humans) and sounds were so valuable that I instantly was able to have my dog come to me when called 100% of the time, even when in the middle of a squirrel chase!! Thanks Patricia for your masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book!!! Review: This book was an absolute pleasure to read. Very well written and filled with a lot of great advice and stories. I have read about 6 dog behavior type books so far and this has to be my favorite...hands down. I am buying copies for my dog owning friends for christmas!!
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended! Review: I'm new to dogs and trying to communicate has been frustrating for both me and my Beauceron. This book is helpful in so many ways. I find myself remembering and applying its nuggets of wisdom every single day. It is highly readable and endlessly useful. If you're reading this to see if it's worth buying, don't hesitate!
Rating: Summary: A Delight Review: This wonderfully written, engrossing book explains differences in human and canine communication, without using confusing scientific jargon. Even someone who spends a considerable amount of time with dogs can gain insight from this book. Nor does it only work on puppies, like your average training book -- dogs of any age understand their own language! My 7-yr-old is responding beautifully to my attempts to communicate with her better.
Rating: Summary: The Other End of the Leash Review: I admit it, I'm an addict when it comes to books on dog behavior. And I have to say that Patricia McConnell is one of the best authors out there -- she is funny and easy to understand and offers some wonderful insights into canine behavior. This book will make you think twice about how you interact with your dog and teach you how to open up the lines of communication using body language, vocalizations (sometimes less is more here!) and so much more. If you love your dog, you owe it to him (and to yourself) to pick up this book!
Rating: Summary: About Dogs Review: This is a wonderful, amazing book about dogs and how us humans relate to them. I absolutely love how she goes over human behavior as primate behavior, and gives descriptions of how us primates will act under certain conditions. She also goes through various instances of dog aggression and how she has dealt with it in her practice. I enjoyed reading her accounts of when she was getting her PhD, and what her study of interest was.
Rating: Summary: Thoughtful Study of Dog and Human Behavior Review: The Other End of the Leash is a delightful, thoughtful, and thought-provoking study of our canine friends' behaviors. The author uses her experience as both a behaviorist and a dog owner to shed light on the often-misunderstood actions of dogs. Her book also enables us to learn how we can best interact with our dogs -- basically, in a compassionate fashion that takes into account their individual personalities and the genetic inheritence of their species. The Other End of the Leash includes practical advice. You'll learn how to "speak dog" by using body language, how to help your dog understand that strangers and other dogs are part of his "family" and to take them in stride, also, and what NOT to do while training your dog. Plus, you'll become fond of McConnell's dogs as you learn their wonderful quirks and habits! I found this book's wisdom and emphasis on kind, compassionate dog training very impressive.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding!! Review: If you only buy one new book, make it this one. Patricia McConnell opens your eyes to a whole new perspective on the dog/human relationship - one based on a real understanding of the differences between canine and primate (human) thinking and body language. This is not a dog training book, but your training and relationship with your dog - with ALL dogs - will be hugely enhanced by this compelling read. Buy it!!
Rating: Summary: A WONDERFUL BOOK for dog lovers!!! Review: As owner of three dogs... I am constantly trying to understand them. :) This book is such a fun, interesting, intelligent guide to "THE DOG". Perfect for any dog owner, and would make such a great gift.
