Rating: Summary: Transforming! Wonderful! Review: Thank you, Linda, for your book. I have been a massage therapist for 21 years of my 55 years. It seems life is continually about healing and seeking, questing for every bit of information I can get in order to become....myself. Here is what it feels like.....everything I have done up to this point has been leading me to the healing from your book. A client brought your book to me, "The Tao of Equus" and it has transformed my life, put into words what I already knew, confirmed the feeling in my bones. Words are empty to express my thankfulness for your journey and how it has affected mine. Glenda Lewis
Rating: Summary: Of Women, Horses & Spirit Review: The culture of living with horses is dominated by men, even though statistics show there are more women riding horses than men. Through standing still & allowing her horses into her psyche, Linda has discovered a new way of living with spirit; another way of caring for & training herself & her horses. If you have ever, even for the briefest of moments, loved a horse, wanted to be a rider, you will not be the same again, for in Linda Kohanov's telling of her story, she allows our broken & wary spirits to see more than the misery in our lives; to believe that within us is a kindness, a strength & a purpose long ago subjugated by our own trainers. Full of revelations & healing. Much more than "just about horses."
Rating: Summary: Re-membering Horse Review: The night after I started reading this book I had a horse dream that has awakened me in a way I never imagined. Kohanov's book is a must read for horse lovers, for all those involved in the healing arts, and for anyone courageous enough or desiring to see life and our connectionsto it in a new way! The horse stories along with extensive research and intelligent concepts carry you through Kohanov's personal transformation and bring you to the point of never again looking at Horse in the same way.
Rating: Summary: Don't bother Review: This book worries me. The author claims to be able to help both horses and humans work through their problems, when it is very clear that she hasn't even worked through her own. She has a huge chip on her shoulder when it comes to the male of the species, whether horse or human. Examples: When a male boyfriend of a "client" expresses interest in wanting to change undesirable behavior, the author insists he's lying and encourages her client to abandon him instead of trying to find him the help he says he wants. Also, at one point she says that the unwanted behavior of an abused gelding is "disrespect", while vertually the same behavior from the mare that she "trained" is perfectly acceptable, and in fact desirable! The book is chock full of examples such as this. Being a woman, these kinds of things in the book gave me the feeling of being preyed upon by the author. That she was trying to scare us into seeing the bad in the male gender in general, even when there may not have been anything there in the first place. The horse training methods she brings to light in the book are extremely suspect, and yet she passes them off as her having a higher understanding of life, both past and present. She also makes sure that the reader knows about the business she runs in Arizona (mentioned on numerous occasions), just in case one might want to attend. No where in the book, however, does she give her qualifications for being a therapist, as she claims she is. All in all, this would probably be an OK book if it were fiction, although even at that it is still an extremely hard read. Unfortunately, it supposedly isn't fiction but real life, which worries me even more. I would not recomend this book.
Rating: Summary: The Tao of Equus Review: This is a book that should be listed under women's empowerment, spiritual healing and transpersonal psychology. Of course, it will also appeal to all equestrians. As a psychotherapist, I have recommended Ms. Kohanov's book to a number of my clients because I believe that she gives such clear examples of the subtleties of continued abuse, whether it be physical, emotional, spiritual or sexual. Her reasearch is extraordoniary and very complete. The book itself is a spiritual journey and takes the reader into otherwordly realms. This mesmerizing, thought provoking book is a must for all seekers of the truth.
Rating: Summary: Learning from horses Review: This is a marvelous book for anyone who loves horses -- or wants to learn how to love horses. It is not, however, a "how-to" book in the usual sense, rather, the author teaches through storytelling, through sharing the story of her own powerful and sometimes astonishing personal journey. She has a refreshingly feminist, intuitive --and horse-crazy! -- approach. Although the author is not herself a therapist, she works with a therapist colleague to help people learn about themselves by relating to horses -- a technique especially helpful for very sensitive and/or intuitive people.
Rating: Summary: A book for the general reader and professional therapist Review: This is a wonderfully well written, interest-holding book. I highly recommend it to everyone interested in a deeper understanding of horses and our relationship to them. The book also highlights the emerging field of equine facilitated psychotherapy, which is tremendously helpful in the treatment of many clinical conditions. Overall, "The Tao of Equus" is just a darn good ride (no Freudian slip intended). Fred P. Gallo, Ph.D., author of "Energy Psychology," "Energy Tapping," "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior," "Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Methods," and editor of "Energy Psychology in Psychotherapy."
Rating: Summary: The Book Galloped Right Up My Spine Review: This is an astonishingly complex and beautiful work. Linda has captured in words something that many of us, who grew up in a saddle, have sensed. A much needed blend of personal story and scholarship was reached in The Tao of Equus, all of which left me with an overall feeling: we have vastly underestimated the intelligence and spiritual significance of our animal brothers and sisters. Linda expresses this in no uncertain terms. For people interested in shamanism, equine-assisted therapeutic modalities, healing, the Spirit World, or who just want to encounter a poignant tale of healing the human-horse bond.
Rating: Summary: Covers the entire spectrum! Review: This is one of the most comprehensive books yet about the horse and problems created by human handling. Linda did serious 'homework' to complete this book; hopefully some will truly understand what she is saying. While it will not necessarily be easy reading for many, any and all who 'own' or consider owning a horse should be required to read this book and pass a stringent exam. It would eliminate a lot of cruelty resulting from ignorance. Thanks you Linda, for telling your story.
Rating: Summary: All the warmth of a big friendly hug Review: This is one of the most wonderful books I have had the pleasure of reading for quite a while. It gives an extraordinary insight into Linda Kohanov's personal spiritual awakening in the company of her horse, Rasa. I felt the spirit of Rasa and I loved the sense of Rasa's sisterly interaction with Linda. Her experience with her horse led Linda Kohanov to explore the many levels of meaning and possibility, both metaphysical and scientific, in the human-horse bond. Linda has drawn together very informative and entertaining anecdotes from cultural and mythology history, as well as neurological research, to tell this story in a way that made me feel that I was wrapped in the warmth of a big, friendly hug. It is a wonderful, nourishing, inspiring and healing feeling to read this book. This is the way our hearts should be touched in all friendships, with all of God's creatures on this beautiful planet. Thank you, Linda, for telling this wonderful story, and congratulations to the publisher on this beautiful publication.
