Rating: Summary: Don't bother with other books on saving money, buy this one. Review: I checked this book out from the library and ended up buying it because it has such useful information on saving money. I saved two hundred dollars on my dress alone and more money in countless other ways. What a realistic look at weddings and budgets!
Rating: Summary: An excellent resource Review: I was very nervous about choosing basically everything for my wedding because of the cost and because I had never planned a wedding before. This book make me feel informed and prepared when it came time to make decisions. It guided me in the right directions and made me think of things I never would have considered without it. It's well worth the money and a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Rating: Summary: Lots of good tips Review: I am impressed with this book's tips on how to save money on a wedding. They give best buys, and things to watch out for. I would recommend it for any couple looking to work within a budget.
Rating: Summary: Really valuable tips! Review: This book can be helpful to a bride on any budget
Rating: Summary: The first book you should read if you are planning a wedding Review: This book is great! I picked it up last week, about two months into my wedding planning, after I started feeling as though the whole wedding industry was scam laden, with a lot of behind the scences collusion. This book breaks everything down AND gives you great advice on what companies are best to deal with for wedding attire. Get the other books with all the party, invitation and flower ideas AFTER you read this book, because you wont be seduced by their fabulous-ness. What I like best about this book is that it is written as though you were talking to a friend who had the scoop, not all the other books and bridal magazines which are written like a beauty magazine article, suggesting if your wedding isnt as ultra fab as they suggest it should be, you suck. DONT LISTEN TO THEM!!! Read this book instead, then all their ideas will just sound like nice ideas but not the law. Also, you get a good idea how the bridal industry works, and I think a little cynicism isnt a bad thing to have when you are pluncking down insane amounts of cash. Good luck with your wedding!
Rating: Summary: Dissappointed - would not recommend Review: I bought this book because I am planning an out-of-state wedding and financing the wedding on my own. After reading the reviews I expected to find great information on planning a "wedding on a realistic budget." But found instead an attitude that in order to have a wedding on a budget it has to be cheap. Thanks, but I will do the research on my own.
Rating: Summary: Abandons good sense in favor of wedding excess Review: Loved the wedding dress guide so this was a real disappointment. A lot of the advice about how to avoid scams and save money was fine, if you didn't know it from other consumer dealings (eg, pay with your credit card in case a place goes out of business), but too often bargain-hunting took the place of good taste. If you can't afford an open bar, don't serve liquor. But charging your guests for drinks? Would you do that at home? Your reception isn't your magic day where everything must be over the top. Your reception is really just another party, albeit probably bigger and nicer than what you usually do. These people are your guests, not your audience and not your finanicial sponsors.I absolutely agree with San Antonio (below) about the letter from the spoiled princess bride.
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended Review: If you only buy one wedding planning book, this should be it! I read it cover to cover in one sitting and have referred back to it many, many times. Unlike books by wedding planners, who write from the standpoint of the wedding industry with all its "you must have" this or that, the Fields write from a consumer's viewpoint. Well-researched and informative.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book - A Must-Have for All Brides to be!!! Review: I spent hours at the book store and this was the best pick! It had real helpful information. I highly recommend this as the first book to buy for brides to be. It'll be one investment that you won't regret!!!
Rating: Summary: A Great Resource and a Great "Friend" Review: I was averse to all wedding planning books, but when a friend gave me this I read it cover to cover and learned so much. I have personally saved over $1,000 based on the advice in the book, from my dress, to my headpiece to my table arrangements. I also REALLY appreciate their witty attitude, so different from the social etiquette "behave-yourself" GARBAGE in most wedding books. Highly recommended - I give it to all my engaged friends now!
