Rating: Summary: EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING..... Review: As a collector of vintage Barbie,(with an extensive supply of most Barbie reference books), I was thoroughly disgusted at not only the author, photographer and editor, but publishers need to reevaluate whether 'greed' will bring more customers back to them in the future. Most publishers are well aware that publishing a reference book on vintage barbie will MAKE THEM MONEY and more than likely bring out the masses who are looking for a good reference book, but lying about the contents and writing a glowing review on the book, when it isn't, won't bring us back a 2nd time. (You may pocket our money once, but not twice). The book was a mess from beginning to end. The history of the doll and identification was marginal at best, and at worst, just plain INACCURATE. Grammar and sentence structure was grade school at times. The photos were bizarre and scary, (not something, I would want an aquaintance to pick up and look through) if it was on my coffe table... There are a lot of Barbie reference and collecting books out there, steer clear of this one, especially if you're just beginning to delve into the vintage dolls, you'll be turned off real quick.
Rating: Summary: These dolls are hardly the BEST of Barbie. :( Review: First off, potential buyers should be aware that this is a coffee table book and definitely not useful in any way for identification purposes. Most Barbie books have hundreds or even thousands of color photos but the quality isn't exactly award-winning. Photos are often badly lit, too small, or even grainy. So it was with great joy that I opened this book and saw large full page stunning color photographs of vintage dolls. Unfortunately my joy was quickly dampened as I noticed that somebody forgot to hire a stylist for the dolls. The photos are so magnified and clear that it's impossible to ignore the flaking face paint, the messy hair, and the stained clothing. "The BEST of Barbie" ??? Not by a long shot! I am thankful this book was a Christmas gift and I did not shell out money myself for it. It is SO disappointing to see crystal clear photographs of vintage dolls in a Barbie book only to have those photos ruined by dolls in crummy condition. Apparently all the dolls pictured in the book were culled from one collection. I'd hate to see the dolls that didn't make the cut! I am not a doll snob (I buy dolls from the Goodwill and fix them up myself) but if a book calls itself "The BEST of Barbie" then I expect to see mint dolls in crisp clean outfits.
Rating: Summary: Excellent text and photos Review: I disagree with another reviewer that all photos should be of mint dolls. This book captures a wide range of Barbie's -- both through the years and through various conditions. As a collector, I find it helpful to see the less-than-perfect dolls. It gives me a far better understanding of different levels of grading. If you are a serious Barbie collector, I feel this book is a "must-have" in your library.

Rating: Summary: Truly the best! Review: I love this book! The photos are simply outstanding. I honestly was astounded at the photography, especially the close-up shots of incredibly rare Barbie dolls and accessories. The tone of the book is fun and lively yet well-informed. I have many books on vintage Barbie dolls, and they are all great collector resources (especially the Ultimate Barbie Doll Book), but this book is wonderful to browse (bringing back fond memories)and use as a resource for pricing. As one reviewer noted, a few of the dolls are not mint in box, but no claim is made that those dolls are mint. Plus, when a photo is zoomed in such that the doll's face covers an entire page, you are going to notice subtle blemishes that only that kind of magnification can see! This book is truly the best of Barbie. I only hope that the author can provide a book in the future covering accessories, houses, cars, etc, in this kind of detail.
Rating: Summary: The Best of Barbie? Review: I was excited being a vintage Barbie fan, but was quickly disappointed viewing the dolls selected for this book. Many of the vintage dolls used are of substandard condition, which does not warrant the high prices quoted. I cannot imagine asking a customer to spend (price) to see dolls with cut hair, obviously repainted faces, visible deficits and stating mint prices. The vintage dolls are horrible! This does a disservice to collectors and consumers seeking valuable information. There are several inaccurate dates given on the vintage dolls and perhaps the author might have been better suited seeking professional assistance in compiling this book. I am returning my copy as I was furstrated seeing so much inaccurate information given! If your looking for a nice coffee table book, this is not it. The newer dolls are represented well I must add, but certainly has done a disservice for vintage collectors and fans. This is certainly NOT the Best of Barbie.
Rating: Summary: Nice Photography Review: The book is about a Wisconsin Barbie doll collector and her awesome collection of dolls, all displayed in a museum of sorts. Being from Wisconsin myself, I was astounded that such a National Treasure (OK, a bit of an exaggeration!) was so close by and I never knew of it! I'm certainly going to make a visit to the place this year. The book itself is interesting for it's close-up pictures and photography. Unlike one reviewer, I didn't mind seeing the vintage dolls in less-than-mint condition. After all, that's the way most of these dolls look. There are plenty of Barbie books out there that show MIB dolls. It was refreshing to see "real" dolls, too. I don't believe the prices that were quoted were for the photographed dolls; they clearly stated "MIB" (mint in box) and most of those dolls weren't mint. What I didn't like about the book was 1) it's outrageous price! (...)It's nice but not THAT nice. And 2) there didn't seem to be a lot of continuity to the format. It jumped around from vintage to mod to new and back again. That became confusing and somewhat irritating. It also skipped a lot of the "Barbie family and friends" dolls. If you are looking for an identification and pricing guide, this isn't it. Neither does it give much explaination as to the background/history of Barbie doll. Buy it for the pictures! And the address of the museum and plan a trip to Wisconsin this coming summer!

Rating: Summary: Definitely Not "the best of Barbie" Review: While this book has some interesting photos from this one collection, it has photographs of anything but the "best" examples of the various Barbies--especially the vintage dolls--some of them are down-right scarey looking with running, gouged face paint, chopped off hair, examples of ponytail dolls without ponytails, mis-identified dolls and a hodge-podge of information and misinformation. If I were a new collector, this book would be of little help in learning what a particular doll should look like--it's easy to find played-with dolls that are all mussed up--the hard part for a new collector is knowing what the doll should look like when learning to gauge authenticity and condition--this book seems like someone was assigned to write a Barbie book and they did it--but that someone was not a collector or authority.
