Rating: Summary: Putting Style on the Couch Review: Judy George always says, "I can spend five minutes looking at your living room and know more about you than your own mother does."I have similar skills. So does our editor, our agent, our art director and all the photographers and stylists who worked on The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design. You can, too, if you spend some time with this book. You'll find yourself spotting an old trunk in a dumpster and saying, "Look, an Idealist must have thrown that out. I hope some Artisan comes by and scoops it up." Flipping through a magazine, you'll come across a photo of a canopy bed swathed in velvet. Looking closer, you'll notice a lava lamp on the nightstand. "Hey!" you'll say, outraged. "What's that Adventurer lamp doing next to that Visionary bed?" Pretty soon, you'll come to understand that your spouse hates knick-knacks because he or she is an Idealist (to Idealists, clutter is a form of personal failure). You'll learn that your best friend is constantly redecorating her home because she has Adventurer tendencies (Adventurers hate being bored), and that your other best friend goes to flea markets every weekend because he's an Artisan, and Artisans love rescuing anything that's been discarded or abandoned (including stray animals). On a house tour, you'll see a painting over a mantle flanked by matching sconces, and think: "This homeowner is a Visionary. I bet the TV is shuttered away in an armoire." It sounds cliché to say that the Domain Book is unlike any decorating book you've ever seen, but it's true. It really does get below the skin of style, and identifies the reasons for the aesthetic choices we make. Personality is the key, and each personality has its corresponding look. Is it audacious to even attempt to divide the world into four kinds of people? Yes. But the Intuitive System gives us tools of understanding, a language with which we can start to take that ethereal thing called style, and make it substantial. Judy and I hope you buy our book, take the 20-question test, look at the pictures (they're gorgeous, and there's tons of them), and come to know the Intuitive System. Especially, we hope that you -- whether you're a Visionary, Artisan, Idealist or Adventurer -- enjoy it, cover to cover.

Rating: Summary: Helps to de-mystify the home decorating experience Review: Judy George's book is so effective in helping a person identify his/her decorating style, in a most unique way. Through a method of identifying a person as one of 4 different types (Artisan, Visionary, Adventurer or Idealist,) the author actually links a person's individual characteristics to home furnishing preferences. Based on a simple questionaire, she demonstrates in a practical and interesting way how intertwined the personality is with these preferences, and why a person may be drawn to certain colors, textures, and styles in home furnishings--i.e., tassels versus mini-blinds, velvet vs. cotton fabric, etc. In my own case, being one who was not too clear on what my decorating "style" was (and to be honest, not overly consumed with decorating at all, trying to raise 3 boys, run a business, and just keep my home as clutter-free as possible) I was able to identify myself from the author's questionnaire, and actually was almost moved to tears to recognize myself from her analysis and description of my "Artisan" leanings. To realize that I do have "a style" after all was enormous, and I am now moving to cultivate these trends in my home, and away from a more eclectic look, which has left me feeling a little scattered, but not quite knowing why. This is a fascinating book to read-- it goes past home decorating, and integrates personality with it in a most unique way. I believe that the book would appeal to anyone, and help to de-mystify the decorating experience especially for those like myself who may have found it overwhelming to discover a "style" and make it work throughout the home. Thank you, Judy! I feel as if I have rediscovered a part of myself!
Rating: Summary: An Observation Review: Just had to add (after reading these reviews)..This book seems to have struck a chord with some, hit a nerve with others!
Rating: Summary: pretty but empty-headed Review: My boyfriend and I were given this book and while we thought the photos were beautifully shot, it seemed the styles were chosen by one person. Plus the book's philosophy seemed trite. The author cared more about showing off her dazzling adverbs then she did information and substance.
Rating: Summary: The Domain Book of Intuitive Design Review: My wife and I have eclectic tatses. Our home consists of a 300+ cookie jar collection all the way through to antique tables, beds and chairs. We have spent many years collecting/decorating, and are constantly seeking opportunities to bridge the gap between our differing design points of view. It is important to us both, that as we personalize each room, and balance is achieved to mesh our combined tastes. Since we entertain frequently, our environment is very important, as we seek to provide warmth and coziness, while at the same time, provoke thoughts of curiosity and of course, smiles. We achieve this through our art, furnishings and use of space, and are actively searching for additions to furnish. The Intuitive Book of Home Design helped us to focus on identifying our unique personalities to ensure that we achieve balance. The test was particularly revealing, not to mention fun. We did find ourselves somewhat on the edge of more then one type, which might explain how the mix of my wife's taste and style, while different then mine, can work well as we developed a greater understanding and appreciation for our unique points of view through our reading. Thanks Judy. Andrew Koven - A satisfied and enlightened Fan
Rating: Summary: Must buy! Why? Simply because it was so inciteful... Review: Not only was the "quiz" extremely easy to take, fun to read and quite inciteful but the illustrations, the content and presentation of this book was absolutely an A+ for me. It doesn't matter what level of "expertise" you categorize yourself in with respect to interior design...this book touches everyone at every level. It's also a great gift idea!
Rating: Summary: A lot to be read between the lines Review: Reading this book has made me go through concepts of well living.Altough the quiz didn't point me as an "idealistic" which I found out that I am, I had fun reading the book.I actually saw myself, members of my family and friends being pictured in each of the 4 cathegories the book describes.I could consider it a bedside book, to which you go back and forth whenever you feel curious about your basic beliefs. There's a lot to be read in between the lines. You just have to let it come to you. It's a book that makes you think after you close it down.
Rating: Summary: I'm sorry I bought this one Review: The blurb and title sound like the book is going to help you explore your personal styles and fine tune your ideas, helping you do things yourself... but the text and the pictures assume that you have enough money to hire a professional decorator. The styles are all cold and extremely impersonal; they look as if they had been designed for a department store display and not for a real people. So save the money from the book and hire the decorator...
