Summary: not much variety
Review: I agree with another reviewer who said the examples in this book are on the chilly side. A bit staid -- and staged -- for my taste. I always like personality quizzes, but my husband and I actually got a clearer interpretation of our personalities and more help in applying that information from "the new decorating book" that we found on amazon last year. (He's more formal, and I'm more casual, so we're still working that out!!!) We also like "the healing home," because it explains using your personality (as reflected in the things you love) to make your home a calming, happy place.

Summary: Great Fun & Pictures -- A book to share with everyone!
Review: I bought 3 copies as holiday gifts for 3 very different people -- my mother, my husband, and my sister, who is an artist. My mother was thrilled I would give her a book on design and it has opened a new line of communications between us. We disucss our results of the quiz(and now she understands we can have different taste and both are ok). She loved going through the book and finding pieces that she owned that Ms. George had pictured in her book. (She was particularly pleased that she had never thrown out her 1940's coffeepot which is displayed in one of the book's beautiful room collages)

My husband said this was one of the few books on home decorating that was written with both men and women in mind. He keeps it on his desk next to his Riverside Shakespare and biography of Frank Lloyd Wright. We had fun taking the quiz together and found that, not to our surpise, we think a great deal alike. Also the quiz caused us to think about our lifestyle now and in the future in ways we had not addressed before.

Overal this was a super gift to my family and myself, because it appealed to everyone on so many different levels. The pictures stimulate new ideas and they are beautifully laid out so you can simulate a whole room, corner, or get an idea for an artifact. The quiz acts as a way to pull togehter all your tastes and interests in a way that is lighthearted and fun. Ms. Georege takes an intimidating topic and makes it accessible to everyone.

Watch out all brides-to-be and new home owning friends this is the gift I'll be giving!

Summary: Entertaining -- a great gift!
Review: I found this book very entertaining. So much so that I've been giving it for wedding shower gifts. It's fun, informative and the brides love to compare their decorating styles with their grooms.

Review: I guess I must be one of the few people that didn't like this book. The quiz may be simple, but it is not very helpful. I was excited to learn what personality Type I was, but when I looked at the photos, I didn't feel like it fit my design style. I think that only four styles is way too few to encompass the varity that is present in interior decoration. I was also disappointed in a similar book called Yes/No Design. Sometimes, if a book doesn't have very useful tips, but beautiful photos, I might still buy the book. The photos don't save this book from the reject pile.

I think that people are much better off choosing their own unique style of interior decoration then trying to have it dictated to them by a quiz. Sometimes, interior decoration is about breaking the rules and going with your own intuition.

Recommendation: There are other books that will give you better guidance towards developing your own style. Good luck!

Other Resources:

The Ultimate Home Style Guide by Katherine Sorrell is the best book on the broadest range of styles that I have seen. Almost all styles are represented here with enough details on colors, fabrics, and other style elements to create the looks yourself.

The Architecture and Design Library series are excellent primers on different design styles. Each book focusess on one style, such as eastern style, Arts & Crafts, French Country, and Retro Modern to name just a few.

Color in Your Home by T. Evelegh has one of the best primers on how to use color. The photos are beautiful. The style is modern country and/or feminine (but not overdone) color schemes.

Color Design File by Geddes-Brown also does a great job of covering the basics, and there are beautiful photos. I like the fact that there are pockets for swatches and magazine inspirations. This book shows primarily Loft style.

Summary: Throw out all those other decorating books
Review: I have enough design, furniture and decorating books to build a small table out of them. But this is the only one you really need. It allows you to tap into the only important source of inspiration: yourself. Everyone who takes the quiz, even those who hate taking quizzes, find things about themselves they didn't know. I'd love to see this approach applied to other areas of life: like relationships, work, etc. Fabulous.

Summary: This Rocks... How to find Your Inner Design Voice!
Review: I have never really given much thought to my design instincts until taking "The Domain Quiz". I was surprised by my results, because as I explored the Domain house tour my archetypal personality ("visionary/idealist") didn't match my real life design preferences. Brainstorm! I asked my wife to take "The Quiz" (she's an "adventurer/artisan") and compared her answers to mine. We had a spirited discussion about design preferences, and taste. My wife makes 90% of our home design decisions (I do things like pick out the TV and CD player), but our home reflects both of us and I benefit from the artistic, "no rules" atmosphere of our home. (For example, if it was up to me, we'd have all white walls and sports memorabilia everywhere. Plus I have my eye on this great baseball glove shaped couch in a local furniture store. See what I mean?) Exploring this subject was great fun. It also gave me greater insight into why my wife approaches home design (and life) as she does. A great read and learning experience. Highly recommended.

Summary: Fun & somewhat informative
Review: I just finished this book and was struck to see how much I was one type and not another! I have given the test to several of my best friends (after I tried to figure them out myself). It is lacking somewhat in substance - I think there could have been more diverse pictures relating each style - but I recommend the book to anyone who wants to have fun and know what style they are. It helps a little to have a home base when you are going for a whole new look and this can help you get a grounding about yourself. The questions are interesting and reflective. I enjoyed it - just dismayed that all the pictures seemed to have been chosen by one person - reflecting her style. E-mail me to find out about my own decorating pages! Karrel

Review: I liked this book, I ended up giving it away to a friend and I will purchase it again and again. You will be able to share with your group of friends the personality test and understand why you like some stuff and why your friends like other things.

Summary: A Great Gift for Anyone Interested in Home Furnishings
Review: I loved the book and find it to be the perfect gift for everyone I know. It's fun to discover one's personality type and then better understand how one should surround oneself. Those whom I have given the book to as gifts have in turn chosen it as the perfect gift to buy for their friends. I applaud Judy George for making thinking about home furnishings fun and innovative. I love it!
