Summary: A House-Plan Catalog for Barns!
Review: Clever idea! There are 400+ house plan catalogs on Amazon.com - just this one on barns. Pretty, Old-timey barns, fair prices for blueprints, nice directory, fun to read. A good buy!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great start for ideas
Review: Definately designed to get you started with ideas for a small country home. The best part of the book is the references to dealers and builders.

Summary: a so so book
Review: I decided to save my money and not buy this book. There are much better books out there for just a little more money. The editing, and proofreading are not up to snuff. It's a source book with information that anybody who is serious about building barns has already bypassed. For the homeowner who wants to build a shed in his back yard, maybe. For the serious barn builder, no.

Summary: Very useful
Review: I greatly enjoyed this book! It gave me some wonderful ideas

Summary: I was immediately disappointed when I opened this book.
Review: I was expecting something with substance. The book wasn't much more than an advertising brochure for construction plans, hardware and related texts. If you're serious about building a barn or backbuilding, I strongly recommend that you look to another source.

Summary: Dear Readers,
Review: I've been surprised by all the readers' reviews of "Barns and Backbuildings." A few are posted here and I've gotten dozens more by mail. People seem to either love or hate the book, according to what they're looking for. Here are my suggestions on its usefulness to you:

If you are a professional barn builder, designer, timber framer or restoration specialist, don't buy this book. There is very little that you can learn from it. You'll see some of your competitors listed in the directory, and that won't help your mood. Instead, e-mail me and I'll send you a questionnaire for your listing in the next editions' directory.

If you're a farmer or rancher looking for a big utility barn or equipment shed, don't buy this book. Most of the designs are smaller than you'll need. E-mail me and I'll give you some sources for blueprints of big barns.

If you're looking for a do-it-yourself project, this isn't the best book for you. Check out John Wagner's "Building a Multi-Use Barn" or David and Jeanie Stiles' books for great build-it-yourself guides.

If you're a building contractor, this book may be of some use. You'll find a variety of designs to show to your clients, sources of blueprints for your building department, and a directory of specialty building products.

If you're a homeowner who needs a new garage, shed, small barn or stable, this book should help. You'll find designs for inspiration, building kits and some pre-fabricated sheds. If you need plans for your builder, planning board or building department, you'll find information on ordering inexpensive blueprints directly from the designers. If you're looking for simple country designs or buildings to back a traditional style home, this book might be one of your best sources.

If you've read "Barns and Backbuildings," and haven't found what you're looking for, please let me know. I'm collecting new designs and directory information for a future edition. Drop me a note by e-mail and I may have some information that helps.

Regards, Don Berg

Summary: A valuable tool for the prospective barn builder.
Review: It's about time someone put together a comprehensive source book devoted to barns. With over ninety designs, and sources for all the hard-to-find barn hardware and accessories, "Barns and Backbuildings" provides a valuable planning tool for anyone thinking about building a barn. Well-organized and easy to read, it's the best resource book on barns, large and small, that I've come across.
