Summary: an essential beginning with some odd gaps
Review: This book (and its companion volume on the Middle Ages) are an essential introduction to some of the basic issues in research on the history of the universities, and the contributions are interesting and well chosen. Nonetheless, this volume in particular seems to have some odd things missing, especially a consideration of the confessional university. The focus seems to be on the later half of the early modern period.
