Review: Though largely outdated for today's battles, this book thoroughly documents the Soviet war machine at its height at the end of the Cold War. Weaponry and tactics are both explored in depth. The mentality of the Soviet officer is also revealed through the systematic firing tables given to the artillery as a substitute for individual initiative. The frequently overlooked Soviet chemical troops were also given an appropriate overview. The weapons and tactics revealed in this book shine a great deal of light on the Republic of Russia's current war in Chechnya as the Russian army in many ways has regressed to the era of thinking described. My only criticism would be that radio communications and surveillance technology was not given as great as discussion as the weaponry and vehicles.
