Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The Epitome of an Ethnographic Novel Review: Crazy February is a wonderful illustration of life in Chiapas, one of the poorest regions of Mexico, in the 1960s. It clearly outlines Mexico's assimilationist policy toward the indigenous peoples of Mexico at that time, and the conditions and poverty that the Maya continue to face even today. It is not a false image but a highly accurate one of life in Chiapas, and I recommend Crazy February to anyone who wants to learn more about the Mayas or the driving forces behind the Zapatista movement in Chiapas.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Indian life in Highland Chiapas Review: This is an excellent book. It captures the reality of life in an Indian village in Mexico during the 1950s and 1960s. The author spent considerable time in the highlands of Chiapas doing anthropological fieldwork, and his fictional work captures many of the aspects of ladino/Indian relations which continue to plague Mexico to this day. If you want a good, emotive background to the Zapatista rebellion, this is it! Also highly recommended: Wilson's fictional account of the Tzeltal uprising of the mid 18th century "A Green Tree and a Dry Tree"
