Rating: Summary: Ummm, is this a textbook? Review: Is this a textbook?...because it reads like one, or better yet, a doctorial thesis. This book is boring, dry and dull. I was intrigued by the idea...Germany immediately after the fall of the Third Reich, but the first 200 pages of the book deal with the last days of the fighting, and the stories in these pages are very repetitive. Then the last 67 pages deal with the days following the defeat, these pages are a bit interesting, dealing with all the displaced persons. You may say "hey, that only adds up to 267 pages"....well yes it does, even though the info here says the book contains 382 pages, the last 115 pages are the afterword, notes bibliography and the index!...A third of the book! Now, I'm no scholarly reader, I am a avid reader of WW2 by the likes of Ambrose and Beevor, and this is nothing like those authors books. I really labored getting through this book, not enjoyable at all. If you can grasp a clinical story like this, you may like it, but if you, (like me) like your WW2 books with more warmth and feeling, then look elsewhere. I thought this review a bit more detailed then simply saying " I hated it"
