Rating: Summary: Typical Ugly-American, condescending twrds WWII real heroes. Review: All references to Charles de Gaulle are demeaning and distort the true impact he had on the turnabout and the final outcome of WW II. True, Churchill provided a home base, but he, let alone the American leadership, didn't devise how to go against the Axis. It is de Gaulle who motivated and led the Free French, without whom the Panzers would have just kept on rolling all the way to Africa. And where were the Americans before 1944, when 20 millions people were getting killed, soldiers and civilians? UNDECIDED IN CONGRESS!. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose! This book is but one of the fine examples of prejudice towards the French leadership and the great exaggerations about the U.S. decisive influence in WWII and other periods that are unabashedly fed to the American public in every portrayal of European historical events. And just where do you teach, Prof. Stokesbury?
Rating: Summary: A Great Read Review: As a lifelong student of military history (World War II, in particular) I found this book a splendid overview of the very complex conflict. Professor Stokesbury conveys what happened without getting mired too deeply in dates and casualty figures. I find his writing style crisp, informative and entertaining. This is a must-read for anyone new to military history or anyone who would like to discover a new perspective.

Rating: Summary: An excellent large-scale overview of WWII Review: For a one book summary of the conduct of WWII, Prof Stokesbury's book is hard to beat. It is written with humor in some instances and reads much like a novel, very hard to put down. The focus of the book is the "Big Picture", don't look for much detail on tactics. His coverage of the Socio-Political issues is very good but this book is written for an American and British Commonwealth audience. Don't come looking to find General DeGaulle as the savior of the Allies. An excellent read.

Rating: Summary: A Very Good Book For Beginners Review: For someone who doesn't know much about World War II, this is a recommended book. It gives you just enough history to understand the different aspects of the war, but doesn't flood you with too much technical information. I'm glad I read this, and recommend it to anyone else that is new to this period of history, or just wants a nice summary to begin with.
Rating: Summary: A very good short History. Review: I though it was a good breif overview of the war. Not to long. It had just the rite amount of information. It had alot of good pre-war material. Also went into battles enough to describe the battle srategie yet not go into it. Very good book for beginers. Like alot of World War II books very patriodic.
Rating: Summary: Informative & Extremely Readable Review: If you are looking for a well written and informative one-volume account of WWII then go no further. This book will probably not just meet your expectations but surpass them. If you have a penchant for history, I strongly recommend the other Stokesbury books as well.

Rating: Summary: Simply Excellent! Review: Simply a superbly written broad history of World War II. I loved this book because it reads much like a novel and has the proper amount of detail without becoming mired in it. Pre-war causes and crisis were given a great amount of emphasis, and focuses on all aspects of the War. Interesting focus on Axis mistakes which cost them the War. Proper emphasis on the Eastern front is given as well as the falicy of French defensive tactics and frankly, this is the best easy reading, broad topic, book on World War II that I have found so far, suitable for beginners and people with extensive WWII knowledge.
