Summary: Powerful/The Greatest book ever on The Russian Eastern Front
Review: I have read this book, at least 5 times and is so powerful that it was not easy to put down. In my opinion, there will never be a book available to match this.I even read this book while on manoeuvres with the British Army while in a slit Trench in the snow! the nearest I could get to how he felt the cold! ( Dont tell them that! ) After reading it it was passed around the Battalion hence having to re-order for the 5th Time this time it's for keeps? Fully recommended and worth 10 stars not 5 !!!

Summary: Absolutly moving
Review: Never was a military. For twenty years now, I read about world war II. I read this book in french the first time 15 years ago and three more times since then, always in french. And tears are still coming to my eyes when I finish the book. The best book I have ever read about the Second World War ...and I have read a lot!

Summary: One of the best first person accounts of soldiering, ever!!!
Review: An incredible account of the experiences that were truly a life and death struggle. Hollywood and historians could never present the reality of war as Guy Sajer has in this book. If you are into reading books about WWII, move this one to the top of your list.

Summary: THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE.
Review: This a book is for all generations. I've read book's, fact and fiction alike, but nothing compare's to the story that this book translate's. With every paged turned, the feeling of actually being there is overwhelming. From a military point of view there are'nt any boring logistic,s only war through the eye's of a forgotten soldior.

Summary: Superb War auto-biography
Review: This is the finest, most terse and best written personal account of WWII, or any war, I have yet read. The description of the "average" soldier's battle on history's most massive and deadly war front, The Russo-German front of WWII, reverberates with a power and vividness that most fiction cannot equal. It is a powerful read, and one I encourage lest we never know the trails that many of our elders went through. I have read nothing that drives home the insanity, horror and brutalness of war for all involved, victor and foe alike. (NOTE: It has NOTHING to do with the promotion of Nazi ideology, contrary to the bizarre bitterness of some reviewers. If they had actually read it, they may have detected the sympathy that Sajer has for his foes or the specific mention of the worthlessness of Nazi ideology while at war. This book trancends all nations and "sides" and addresses the individual man at war. Please use your own maturity and read the book without a silly bias. The war is over, I am afriad, and a 50 year latent biterness will not change the superbness of this book.)

Summary: A powerfully brutal view of war on the Russian Front
Review: This is a must-read for any student of the German army in WWII or the Eastern Front. As opposed to the melancholy of All Quiet on the Western Front, or the "war is a great experience" of Storm of Steel, Sajer gives what is probably the most truthful account of modern war: exhaustion and indifference to death.

Summary: WAR IS HELL
Review: Guy Sajer brings to your fingertips a riveting account of a German foot soldier on the Ostfront in World War 2. From the freezing cold of the Russian winter to the near bullet misses this account gives an insight into the madness and frustration that war causes.

An excellent book you will not want to put down.

Summary: Amazing!
Review: I read this book from the library - the original edition. I have read many accounts of the Eastern Front BUT NONE come anywhere close to describing the horrors of fighting there. I'm glad to see that this book has been re-released! It's THE WWII book to own if you can only buy one!

Summary: The Most Powerful Book (except the Bible) You Will Ever Read
Review: I first read this book in 1975 when I bought it second hand at a high school book sale. I have since served in the US Army as an officer, am Airborne and Air Assault trained. Nothing compared to Guy Sajer went through. I am ordering the book again to have a fresh copy because my present copy is so worn. I cherish this powerful and moving autobiography. It is simply the best book you will read other than the Bible. I can only wonder what happened to Guy Sajer. Is he still alive? I would surely like to know and if anyone does please email me.

Summary: An incredible story
