Summary: Emotional,a tribute to all Axis soldiers in Russia
Review: Guy Sajer has given us a very deep felt view of the war with Russia. When Mr. Sajer describes how he was on a train in the middle of the night, heading east, and he saw a train going west with Russian prisoners on it.The Russians had stacked their dead, stripped of clothes,in front of them for protection from the wind. This description gets the reader prepared for the hell that was the Eastern Front. As you read his account you realize that the Wehrmacht was just as brutal on their own men as they were to the Russian.Mr.Sajer has written a book that every man needs to read before entering the Infantry.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Quite a good war novel, but that's it
Review: I agree with the coments others wrote about how good of a book this is, but the one problem I had with this book was whether it was a true story. It reads far too much like a novel (a watered-down "All Quiet on the Western Front" to be exact). Does anyone actually believe that Sajer is able to remember minute details of combat when he was half out of his head with fear anyway? Also, characters like "the veteran". Is that a loaded one-dimensional character? And of course he dies honorably. Then there's his beloved Hauptmann, the classic "Good German". He doesn't want to kill partisans and then dies a silly, unheroic death from a mine. War is SO CRUEL!

One would think that an older writer, reflecting back on his youthful experiences, would be more circumspect, especially in regard to the Eastern Front. However, this book reads like it was written by someone with the life experience of a 20-year-old. The perspective seems to be that the Russians started the damn war!

I know I'm from the "Show-Me" state, but I'd have liked to have had an introduction from a pointy-headed academic testifying that the story was true. Without independent confirmation, I'd have to rate this as a good war novel, but about as non-fiction as "Hogan's Heros".

Summary: Outstanding...
Review: This is the best book that I have had the chance to read. A true testament to all soldier's.

Summary: The most powerful book I have ever read...
Review: This really is the most powerful book I have ever read. The haunting tragedy is beyond words. The book was gripping from start to finish, and was very somber and sobering. I never realized just how bad the WWII Eastern Front was. It was bad. I can't recommend this book enough. It is a testament against war. Things will never seem bad in your life again after reading this...

Summary: The best book I have ever read!
Review: Once I started reading it I could not put it down. From start to finish Guy Sajer pulls you into his world of hell that existed on the Eastern Front. The gruesome reality of war is brought upon the reader. Never before has any book made me feel the way "The Forgotten Soldier" has.

Summary: My A.P. European Students are now required to read this book
Review: The best book ever written about the War on the Eastern Front! It almost borders on fiction in that it is so unbelievable.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Unbelievably Graphic and real; a must read!
Review: I have read this book three times, and recommend it to almost everyone I meet. It is real and brutally honest. Being the grandson of a German Eastern Front veteran, it gave me a greater appreciation for what he went through. It is my understanding that Sajer doesn't want to discuss his experiences with anyone, and who can blame him?

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A first-person narrative equivilant to a roller coater ride
Review: Guy Sajer takes the reader on the ride of their life. His story is a riviting and unstoppable read from page one to the end. I've read this book three times over the last ten years and everytime the horror, anguish, and hell shock me from my complacent existance. I currently live approx. 50 km from Mr Sajer's hometown. I know the tug-of-war the French and Germans have employed in the Alsace region - and in this area there are very few old men. I appreciate the significance of Mr Sajer's gifts: Surviving and testifying.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Powerful and haunting
Review: Guy Sajer has successfully written a most powerful and haunting account of the life of a foot soldier in World War II. I would like to write him to thank him, yet am having trouble locating an address through the publisher. Any insights would be most helpful. I understand he is still alive and well in Paris.
