Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Easy to read excellent narration of India's history
Review: Most lucid in its presentation and covering almost all aspects of Indian culture, values and history this book explores the depths of India's personality while providing an outstanding description of India's freedom movement. AN ABSOLUTE MUST. This book was written during Nehru's imprisonment by the British during the freedom struggle. Other books by the same author which are equally captivating are "Glimpses of World History", and "Letters to my Daughter".

Summary: Book with a difference.
Review: One of the best books on India and its history. Revolving around the freedom struggle movement of India it vaslty describes the culture and and origin of Indians. Shows the kind of knowledge the author had about India and world.

Summary: Cool book for wise men.
Review: This is a cool book. Informative and also thought provoking with it's definitions ranging form Indian to what a Hindu really is. Also check out few more titles like The 100- A ranking of the most influential persons in history.

Summary: The version of this book that I read
Review: This was an extremely bloated, silly book. Ideas dangling off into nowhere and irrelevant facts.

It is very possible to write a lot and simultaneously assert nothing (as anyone who's ever read Ayn Rand knows). This is yet another rich example of that.

Perhaps I did not get the abridged version. That would have been a good idea. If it was the abridged version that I got, I am sorry for anyone who had to read the full text.

Summary: romantic view of some unpleasant reality
Review: Whether as a Prime Minister or an author, Nehru was a romantic and remained so until Chinese invasion of India in 1962. In this books he is at his romantic best.

Indeed, as a fellow reviewer on this page has said, this book reamins an excellent introduction to three thousand years of Indian history but the treatment of the subject remains glossy.

Author Nehru struggles reconciling the destruction wrought by Muslim invaders with the so-called secular identity Prime Minister Nehru tried to bestow on India.
