Rating: Summary: Must reading for anyone seeking the truth Review: ... Joan Peters tells it like she found it. Her documents, coming from non-Jewish sources, and her aim to be sympathetic to the Arabs immigrants who came to call themselves Palestinians, make this a powerful work. I think everyone who goes to Washington, from the President to congressmen, should read this book. I also think everyone in Israel needs to read it, too many are beginning to believe repeated untruths.I salute Joan Peters for publishing this, even when she found the facts to be different from her prior misconceptions.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic and Erudite Review: ..., turn to this outstanding work of research. What you'll find are facts, facts, and more facts -- with citations, so you can check the information yourself -- delivered in an engaging, fluid style. A real contribution to the field of Arab-Israeli studies
Rating: Summary: NOT out of print Review: ...P>This is the best book I have ever read on the topic. It contains original research and material that has been overlooked because it was buried in long-forgotten archives in England and Israel. Ms. Peters began to write a book about the Palestinians, and due to the overwhelming amount of material she found regarding the true source of the conflict in the Middle East, she had to change course after two years of research. That takes guts. Kudos to Ms. Peters for this excellent book. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Required Reading Review: A monumental work that will dispel many of the myths held as truth today. This book needs to be re-published.
Rating: Summary: Caveat lector Review: Artists often paint an idealized portrait of their subject, looking attractive, in a good light, often clad in flattering clothing and jewellery, excluding pimples, warts, eczema, dandruff, yellow teeth and all else that is part of the real picture. So it is with this unabashedly pro-Zionist book. Many of the above reviews show that those who love Israel and see in it no imperfections will praise the book, those who are violently anti-Israel will curse it. Then there are those who champion accuracy and honesty and do not tolerate pseudo-scholarship and manipulation of the statistics. No matter that Peters was so pro-Palestinian at first, then discovered all these facts that turned her into the opposite camp. That reversal of opinion has nothing to do with the accuracy of said facts. Read "From Time Immemorial" and then follow it with "Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict" by Norman G. Finkelstein (1995). In November of 1985, the New York Times was probably the last progressive newspaper to acknowledge that Peters' opus was a pre-meditated fraud, only after escalating accusations of censorship from the British press. The admission was finally posted on the theatre page of the Thanksgiving Day issue, with no index listing. Such a grave charge is not the work of pro-Palestinian sympathizers who conspired to cast doubts upon the "truth." Even Daniel Pipes has criticized Peters' shoddy use of facts and statistics, although Pipes certainly agrees with her central thesis. So, beware of relying on only one source, follow up with more current appraisals of this book.
Rating: Summary: Concise and comprehensive Review: Being a neutral outsider with regards to this conflict, I found that the book was an interesting read. Many of the author's findings were well researched and many of the points raised were valid and relevant to the conflict.... I did not find this book to be biased towards any side, considering that the amount of factual information presented by the author gave many of her arguments strong factual credibility. Another interesting read is A travel guide to Palestine and Syria, published in 1906 by Karl Baedeker. This book illustrates such truths as that even when the Islamic Ottoman Empire ruled the region, the Muslim population in the city of Jerusalem was minimal. Many of the facts that we get today have been greatly distorted and works such as these, especially the 1906 book outline quite clearly the statistics of that era and how we can interpret these facts and figures to be relevant in todays Mideast conflict.
Rating: Summary: The truth is precious Review: During the Second World War Winston Churchill stated in reference to the Enigma project, "In war the truth is so precious that at all times she must be attended to by a bodyguard of lies". Over the past 10yrs in the war for Ideas and Worldviews I have watched and listened to the very successful demonisation of Israel and the Jewish people - this with the concurrent distortion, omission and trickery of facts and information both by the Media and, sadly, Academia. Read the book, prove it, look up on the web the source documents, collate the information, verify them, then make up your own mind. But beware you might not like what you find, for no one likes being lied to, least of all by people, who hand on their hearts, say "trust us". Points to ponder: Israel occupies but 3% of the Middle East and is the only democracy. All of the other states in the area have at some time or other collaborated together to destroy Israel and drive the Jewish occupants into the sea. If you read Arabic you will read this in the daily papers right now. To date more than 60% of UN resolutions since 1948 covering the whole globe have been concerning Israel and it's continued existance. Can 4 million people really be so wicked, cruel and vexatious? It makes you think, doesn't it? Even so read, enjoy and digest. Oh and it's not a bath book either. You'll be jumping to a notepad every five minutes saying "I never knew that" or "that wasn't what I was taught at school" or "National Geographic never told us that". You will get angry, for both sides, the Jews & the ordinary Arabs who did live there and do so today, for they have both been cruely used and dare I say it, by London, Paris, & Washington as much as anyone else. Realpolitik takes no heed to right or wrong, just expediancy.
Rating: Summary: from time imemorial Review: excellent original research, well documented and surprising that it has gone from the publishers list. tom segev's recent book supplements this fine study, although he does not credit joan peters for her sources that he drew on.
Rating: Summary: fascinating and illuminating - a must read on the Middle Eas Review: Excellent, well researched, convincing... If you are interested in the Middle East Arab war on Israel, this is a must read. load.
Rating: Summary: The definitive resource Review: Exhaustively researched and footnoted, Peters' book explodes numerous myths about the Middle East, past and present. Those facts about the Arab-Jewish conflict that "everyone knows?" Most of them are false. Although thorough to a fault, the book is far from a chore to read. It's as hard to put down as some good novels, actually. And for those seeking more, the lengthy footnotes and bibliography provide an enormous wealth of resources. Truly, you don't know enough about the conflict, which rages to this day, until you've read this book. It's that essential.
