Summary: decent creative writing assignment gets published
Review: An OK read, but there are more impressive memoirs. This seems like a creative writing project that was expanded at the encouragement of an enthusiastic creative writing teacher. Ms. Santiago often seems on the verge of making some fabulous insight into life, or truth, or family, or a clash of cultures, or religion, or sibling rivalry, et cetera, but cannot express the conclusion or wisdom. I think other enthralled readers have projected their own profundities into these voids, endearing them to this book. See if you agree: when you get to those points, ask yourself: "and...?" Less disappointing was how the narrative flow is interrupted by overly drawn metaphors and too-colorful descriptions. This book might be more meaningful to you if you have had the same experience as Ms. Santiago, traversing cultures in childhood. Or if you don't mind inserting your own profundities.

Review: EL LIBRO ES EXCELENTE, LAS DESCRIPCIONES Y EL ESTILO DE NARRACION UTILIZADO ES MAGNIFICO, LLEVA AL LECTOR A NO DETENER LA LECTURA Y LO OBLIGA A TERMINAR DE LEER EL LIBRO PARA CONOCER EN QUE CULMINO SU CARRERA.

LO UNICO QUE ENCONTRE Y QUE HUBIESE CAMBIADO ES EL FINAL, ME GUSTARIA HABER TENIDO MAS INFORMACION DE LA FAMILIA DE ESMERALDA.

SI ES POSIBLE CONTACTARME CON ELLA AGRADECERE ASI ME LO DEJEN SABER A MI DIRECCION ELECTRONICA. Review: Es una lástima que Esmeralda Santiago haya decidido traducir ella misma su libro. Sus errores en español distraen de una historia bien contada. Me encantaría sugerirle a la autora que siguiera los pasos de Julia Alvarez quien no solo consiguió un excelente traductor para "En el tiempo de las mariposas" sino que además tenía un asesor para los regionalismos. Por mi parte, de volver a leer a Santiago, iría a la versión original en inglés.

Review: Hola:Yo soy puertorriquena y vivo en Illinois.Hace unos meses una amiga me recomendo este libro (Cuando era puertorriquena)y no pense que me gusatria tanto.Me llevo de regreso a mi isla querida en un vuelo directo,esa isla maravillosa donde quisiera estar cada dia.La realidad es que la isla que ella describe yo no la conozco tal y como ella lo dice porque hoy en dia es muy diferente.LLena de progreso y civilizacion.Pero atravez del libro senti el espiritu de lo que realmente uno es.Puedes vivir en cualquier lugar pero ni aun el frio que trae la nieve puede borrar esa sangre latina que corre por nuestras venas.Y como puertorriquena que soy me siento orgullosa de cada uno de mis paisanos que decide superarse lejos de su hogar,de su cultura.De aquel que puede salir de su pais y demostrar que no importa donde este puede ser una persona de bien.Eso es digno de admirar.Saludos y felicitaciones a Esmaralda Santiago por este libro,realmente es un exito.Te deseo que continues adelante. Summary: Exquisite memories of Puerto Rico for my mother
Review: I bought this book for my mother because I knew she would love to read something in her native language that would bring back fond memories of her childhood in Puerto Rico. I also hoped that giving her this book would mean something special to her coming from her half-gringa daughter. She told me that shortly into the book she was remembering things she had regrettably forgotten in her 40+ years here in the states, things like words, idiomatic expressions, feelings she had, etc. I think this book is one of the best presents I ever gave my mother and I am thankful that Esmeralda Santiago presented me with such a great opportunity to make my mother happy.
