Rating: Summary: the incarnate devil Review: HST is by far the most gifted writer of the 20th century. His prose is nowhere near Hemingway and his imagination will never touch the thought and reason of James Joyce, but holy schnikes, they never in a million years could have lived through the Mint 400 and the Highway patrolman, much less remembered enough to put those thoughts and impressions onto paper. For all those who bask in theglory of flower power, peace, love, and drugs, this book has shown that when you kick in the face of the 1960s, all you have left is a pair of drug-addled fiends gnashing their teeth at everything America holds dear and true. You are left with the savage brutality that our hope and glory failed and all we are with is, "those god**mn bats". One of the greatest books ever penned---------------------
Rating: Summary: Greatest Literature of Our Time Review: Hunter S. Thompson is a genius. This novel is sick, twisted, depraved, and it is the most painfully accurate vision of the "American Dream" out there. It really is like no other book.
Rating: Summary: A classic piece of American lietrature (albiet insane) Review: Hunter S. Thompson's blistering and often weridly acurate account of the American dream in 1971 is actually well written by Dr. Thompson. He gives us 2 very strange characters- Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo. They are going on a long trip (trip is used in more ways than one) to Las Vegas to cover a sporting event and a drug conference (the fact that Duke covers a drug conference is just one of the best ironies in the book). Strange, but a good companion and also Thompson's best novel.
Rating: Summary: Buy the ticket, take the ride..... Review: Hunter Thompson, master of the literary word, proves in this single work, that he is a true genius. This book is not so much a read, as it is a ride. He takes us through a wild, and twisted journey through Las Vegas in search of the American Dream, through the eyes of Raoul Duke, along with his Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo. This is a terrific book, and without a doubt, should've been number 1 on the list of the all time greats. Hunter is a master. As Raoul Duke once said, "Buy the ticket, take the ride."
Rating: Summary: gimme a drink Review: I blame this book for makin' me a damn'd ol' drunk
Rating: Summary: Let your imagination flow Review: I got thi book as a gift. I was travelling and it seemed like an easy read for the plane ride. I loved it. I was laughing out loud at times. All you need is some time, and a good imagination and you are in for a wonderful laughing trip.
I saw the movie, and didnt like it as much. Actually, I couldn't even keep watching in. So I guess if you saw the movie, you will love the book.
Rating: Summary: I love this guy! Review: I loved Hunter Thompson. This book was the best example of why.
The book has some of the most spectacular writing that I have ever seen. This guy was unique, an original. "Started Gonzo journalism." But as far as I can tell, he was the only Gonzo journalist. The uniqueness was what made it all work. You were not reading some group political opinion. These were the thoughts of a true individual. I'm going to miss him.
Rating: Summary: Savage Thoughts, SavageTimes Review: I loved this great, savage, and wild novel on Hunter S. Thompson. Its all about HST going on his way to Las Vagas to find the American dream. He's got his attorney side kick with him and there doing every thing you would of never thought possible. Breaking all the rules in a beautiful way. There is no way I can really explain it, it shifts thoughts from flash backs from the sixties and it will explain all your dreams in a way. It's a mind twister, well to me it was.You have to read it 5 or 6 times because you learn new things from it every time you read it.There are secerts all in there even if they were not ment to be, but it's all in your in your mind. Its a very good book on the drug culture also ,HST Knows how to have savage fun, and take all the sick and twisted thoughts of highly powerful LSD trips and spill them out in front of you while you read this great book and truley show you the mind of a genius. It just shows you a very good way to live life to the fullest. And it's funny too in a good and weird way.Well i could go on for ever about HST and this great book but every thing stops some were ,so just go get the book and read it because you would be missing somthing very amazing and savage at the same time. Hope you enjoyed and Goodbye.
Rating: Summary: too much Review: I wanted to rate this book lower than "4" but I realized that the writing was good and, for its' genre, it's somewhat of a classic. However, It really got old fast trying to figure out why I was still reading about an out of control, hedonistic, "journalist". I realize that there was an element of exageration in all this drunken rampage(at least I THINK there was). However, for what purpose? I have a respect for the writer that comes from enjoying his "Hells Angels" and "The Great Shark Hunt". There were certainly some wild parts in there as well but it was mixed with some really insightful (or is it inciteful) journalism. I have a feeling that Thompson saw his excesses as his success and was playing to his own audience in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". In that sense he too became an establishment figure. I just can't get excited about all this craziness anymore. I will give his "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" a try, though. If the old Hunter Thompson wrote that one then it should be quite a book.
