Summary: The tapes do not do justice to the best book I ever read.
Review: This book is destined to be a classic in American literature. Unfortunately, Dick Estell's reading of the book on tape miserably failed to convey the feelings or portray the soul of the author. The tapes do not do justice to a great work of literature . I rate to book 10, and the tapes 3. Properly redone, the tapes could be a " best seller"

Summary: One of the best aviation books ever.
Review: My CFI recommended this as a must read for his students. I bought it, read it, read it again, and will probably read it many more times. One of the best aviation books ever

Summary: gut wrenching truth
Review: I am a military pilot with 2500 hours and 13 years in fighter and heavy aircraft. This book is right on the money; I couldn't put it down. To read of the trials of our aviation forefathers and then follow in their footsteps... You, the aviation enthusiast, MUST read this book. You, the amateur philosopher , MUST read this book. It is not just an aviation book, but a story of people and emotions, heartbreak and victory. A real "ten."

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A classic. If you love aviation, it is a must read.
Review: I read this book when I was a youngster, and my generation of aviators consider this book and its stories to be a part of their aviation heritage. Anyone who loves adventure, or airplanes, or aviation, should read this book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Ganns best.
Review: As with the other reviews, a must read for anyone interested in aviation or just for a very well written true story. His 2nd best is Island In The Sky if it can be found

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Awe inspiring vividness and style, indelibly rendered.
Review: A favorite of editor of an aviation trade magazine, his recommend tion was most enjoyable. You will never take a pilot's role in preserving your life for granted, and you will long remember that each day is a gift that has arrived for reasons far deeper than your own best efforts. The amazing level of detail and the writing style of Mr. Gann is an inspiration to all, especially anyone who flys or dreams to fly, or seeks to enrich one's life by exposure to an essential chronicle of American history recounted by an extraordinary storyteller. This review makes no attempt to approach the beauty of this incredible masterpiece of non-fiction. It must be read.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Must Read!!
Review: I have never seen a book more poigniontly mix tragedy and truth. Ernests Ganns writing style is fluid, and this book is a must for any pilot, just don't try most of the stuff he does. Fate may not smile upon you so well...

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Must Read!
Review: When people ask me why I fly, this is the book I tell them to read. Unfortunately, it only proves that I was born 50 years too late, and that the best years to be working in the aviation industry are behind us now.

This book should be required reading for anyone who thinks that flying an aircraft is a glamorous bus driver job, and it should also be required for anyone who is considering a job in the aviation industry.

Ernie Gann does a marvelous job of bringing the reader in front of the closed door of the cockpit, and gives the reader an excellent chance to develop an appreciation of flying.

Summary: a must read...
Review: This book is a must read for any pilot, especially for those who make their living in the cockpit...

Summary: Plane Truth
Review: I am pleased to see that people are still reading this wonderful book; it has long been one of my favorites. Author Ernest K. Gann is probably better known for his novels, esp. THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, but FATE IS THE HUNTER is non-fiction, an autobiography of Gann's career as a commercial pilot. It has many memorable anecdotes and people from the early days--1930's and 40's--of aviation. We meet Hughen, a captain who brought an ice-laden DC-2 to a safe landing, and Ross, who gave the rookie Gann self-confidence by sharing take-offs and landings 50-50, regardless of weather or mechancial problems. This is a book that really takes you "inside the cockpit". Take your seat, and fasten your seatbelt. This is a "flight" you will long remember.
