Summary: A must read for aviation enthusiasts
Review: The book chronicles Gann's career as a "high timer," an airline pilot with more than 10,000 hours in his log book. If you are a fan of the propeller era of air transport, (DC-2/DC-3/DC-4) you will find his accounts of life on the flight deck fascinating. Additionally, private pilots may learn useful tips for flying in foul weather.

Summary: Stick and Rudder, E.K. Gann, Aviation, Love of Flight...
Review: Without question, the one book that lets us know how each and everyone of us feels about the love we call flying...Set yourself in, grab the yolk, and close your eyes...If you care about props, recips, cowl flaps, and anything reselbeling something like a DC- 2 through 7, please read this book, and, in addition, respond to me, as. responsibily, this is the most important aviation novel, if, and only if, you have it in your blood...One Hellava book for true aviatiors...Looking forward to discussing with all of you that truly can "be within this book"...That is how good it is...Flaps up...

Summary: The best aviation-related book I have read.
Review: ...and I have read scores and scores of aviation books. Gann's word choices are so descriptive, they clarify and entertain at the same time. The humor is as dry as a James Bond martini. I have read FITH three times. Can't recommend it more highly.

Summary: Magnificent
Review: Without a doubt, the best book I have ever read about 30's, 40's flying. Excellent. I read this one in 1961 when it first was published. I can still remember most of the incidents Gann describes. They live in my memory. The "Match" incident in a storm flying a DC-3 on an Eastern route, the time he lifted a C-87 at the last moment on takeoff by extending full flaps to avoid hitting the Taj Mahal.. An epict book. Try it, it will be hard to put down. B.G.Schlueter

Summary: After 10 years, I still find myself thinking about this book
Review: I read this book 10 years ago for an aviation class and I couldn't put it down! I recommend it for anyone who is a pilot, wants to be a pilot, or is interested in flying at all. Gann is one of the most colorful writers I have ever read. His use of descriptive narrative puts the reader right into to cockpit!

Summary: An Unforgettable Book
Review: I read this book at least 25 years ago and have thought about it as a "must find and re-read". I finally found it on this site and it was just as memorable as I remembered it. I am ordering it for a gift for my father-in-law, who is impossible to buy for.

Summary: A Miracle! Gann captures the spirit of flight!
Review: As a career aviator, I have experienced countless moments -- lifelong memories which I thought would go forever uncommunicable. Gann has done the impossible -- he has captured them on the written page to be shared by all. If you have friends or family who love the subject, your Christmas shopping is done!! If flight is a wonder to you, don't miss this one!

Summary: Very well written
Review: The author's dialog is awesome. For a future pilot I also believe it teaches many lessons that are valuable to be a successful pilot.

Summary: Daddy recommended it and he was absolutely right.
Review: My father was a voracious reader, rarely seen without a book in his hand. Almost 25 years ago, he recommended this book to me and I am now in my third reading. Gann's command of the subject is exceeded only by his command of the language. Oh! to be able to write so well. Fly with this book and enjoy!

Summary: A treasure
Review: I'm a writer and an aviation enthusiast, not a pilot, but I'd have to rank this as one of the two best books I have read in the last decade, and far and away the best aviation book I have ever read.

This is a rare combination -- Gann not only has many wonderful yarns to spin but is a writer of truly top-drawer literary ability. As others have said, the book stands up well to repeated reading. My copy is battered and torn, but much loved.
