Rating: Summary: Fate is the Hunter Review: Mr. Gann's story is a wonderfully detailed picture of commercial aviation from prior to WWII until the Korean War. Through his words the author makes the story, characters, and places come alive to the reader. A must read for every commercial pilot, aspiring commercial pilot, or aviation history enthusist!
Rating: Summary: A must read for aviators! Review: I read this book with fasination as I was lead and exposed to the experiences of the pioneers of the airline industry in particular and aviation in general. As an aviator myself, the truth about fate and how it plays a role in our lives conducting what we love to do best, was very susinctly detailed by Mr. Gann. Although at times his writing style was hard to follow, the story telling and consistancy of the theme was entertaining, and at times, very exciting. Many times I sat, smiled and mused; "there are those that have, and there are those that will...." A great book to read on a boat, in front of the fire, on a beach, or on a long plane trip. Have fun!
Rating: Summary: True view from the cockpit. Review: Mr. Gann put the the reader seated on the left seat of big propliners, without boring us with unnecessary details. A great book, not easy to find here in S.America.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic story of an airline pilot Review: I loved the book when I read it back in 1971 when I was in the airforce in Alaska. A year or so later I saw a movie on television by the same name. "Fate Is The Hunter" I would like to find this movie if it is around somewhere on video. If anyone can help please send me an email at jagwlee@cs.com
Rating: Summary: Captures the True Spirit of flying for the airlines Review: This book truly captures the emotions of a pilot and what it was like to fly for the flegling airline industry 60 years ago. Mr. Gann also chronicals the start of M.A.T.S. (military air transport service) of WW II. Even though it was written in the time frame of the 30's and 40's it all holds true in todays flying. A must read for any pilot interested in the history of the industry
Rating: Summary: Must Read Review: This novel is a must read for any aspiring airline pilot. Even though the novel was written before I was born, the tone of the novel is a perfect fit for today's flying environment. I have over eight thousand hours of flying, and every time an unusual event occurs in the cockpit, I'm brought back to the characters in this book. If you want to experience the love and occasional terror that flying offers, read this book.
Rating: Summary: The measure of a man... Review: Everyone here has given this book five stars and I am no exception. Pilots know that flying is not just transportation but a way of learning who you really are, the stuff you are made of. This book is clearly Gann's masterwork. After reading the chapter on thunderstorms, I thought that there was just no better aviation writing and I still had half the book to go. Of course, then came the chapter on flying in ice. This alone is worth the price of the book and is probably the best aviation story every told. My hair stood on end for days... A great blend of flying, adventure and good writing.
Rating: Summary: Gann puts you in the cockpit!!! And gets you thinking . Review: The finest aviation memior ever written. A biography that reads like a novel. Read the chapters about flying in ice and thunderstorms and you'll be back with Gann in the cockpits of DC-2s and 3s. But yet it's not an "airplane" book, it's a reflction on life's paths. A must read for anyone who loves flying or has ever wondered about our destiny. He wonders about fate without getting into metaphysics...Gann doesn't come across as a philospher, rather as a man asking the questions we all ask ourselves (but rarely admit to). I still have the first copy I bought nearly 30 years ago, and my autographed copy is one of my prized possessions. Once you read it, you'll find yourself reading it every couple of years!
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorites. Review: I first read this book when I borrowed it from my grandfather. He recommended it, though I told him I did not like "guy" books. He said that I would like this one, and he was right. It is one of the best books I have ever read, and I am thrilled to find a copy of my own.
Rating: Summary: Best book I have read yet. Review: I am a relative of Ernest and his book "Fate is the Hunter" is the best book I have ever read, I have yet to find a book that tops it. His wording of the book will put you in the cockpit with him. I encourage anyone that likes anything about flight to read this book.
