Small, lightweight, and flawlessly designed and produced, it's filled with paintings, photos, lyrics, witticisms, and a text that explores the literary, musical, and fine arts essence of California, taking on a variety of topics, from Picturing the Land and Making History to Literary Arts and Modernism in California. Under Pastimes, for instance, is the Cult of the Car, with a history of the car's ascendance, a cover picture from The California Motorist of 1918, a Frank Romero painting "Downtown" from 1990, and a snazzy photo of a 1932 Deuce Coupe.
