Rating: Summary: Personal Life Choices in Challenging Times Review: "Make your personal life choices knowing the consequences of your decisions. It really is your life, and what you decide to make of it is your choice." ~Sumant PendharkarThe world seems wide open when you are a teenager. Do you even really consider the seriousness of your decisions? Raising Yourself is a book about identifying crucial choices teenagers are likely to confront in their daily social interactions. This is a book for teens and about teens. Some of the main topics include such issues as: Decisions that will Derail your Life - pregnancy, dropping out of school, drugs and gangs. Volunteering Gangs Drugs Peer Pressure Education Values to Carry with you Through Life Dealing with Verbal Abuse Dating Career Options Money 101 I like the "reality check" section where Sumant Pendharkar lists what it costs to live by yourself. I'd like to say that $100 for food seems to be a very low estimate, especially if you want to eat healthy or buy organic foods. In the Peers section, Sumant Pendharkar explains the good, bad and the ugly aspects. His section on how to choose friends is excellent. Then, he exposes the real reason tobacco companies try to get teens to smoke. In the Mental and Physical development section, Sumant encourages teens to take reading seriously and encourages a life filled with learning, hobbies, exercise and good financial decisions. I wish someone had given me a book like this when I was a teenager and I've even learned some valuable tips from reading it about 20 years late. This book would make an excellent textbook. I'm pretty sure this book would open up communication between parents and teenagers if read by both and then discussed. ~TheRebeccaReview.com

Rating: Summary: Answers to a teenager's curiosity about their future Review: As children grow, they are constantly searching for ways to be independent. They may not share their problems with their parents, and so begin to look for solutions on their own. This is where the help of a tell-all book comes in :). The book, "Raising Yourself: Making the Right Choices," by Sumant Pendharkar, is a self-help book for children over age 10, that touches on subjects such as being a teenager; self-doubts; the teen phase; the cost of living on their own; pregnancy; and other topics that children have questions about. Of course the best scenario would be for a child to speak to their parents whenever they have a question, but we all know how hard it is to approach parents about certain topics :). My ParenTime recommends "Raising Yourself: Making the Right Choices" - it's an upfront look at what the future has to offer our children. It's direct enough to be used as a "guide" so children can become familiar with some of the decisions they will be faced with, and what the consequences will be.
Rating: Summary: A second opinion worth reading Review: I have a 16 yr old daughter who is contemplating leaving school to 'see the world'. I left a copy of this book out for her to see. It took a few weeks but she asked me out of the blue, "Is it really true, that it is harder to go back to school once you are out and worked for a few years?" Wow! A chance to help her see the future. The book is well written and to the point. IMHO, a must read for the teenagers (and the parents).
Rating: Summary: For kids needing to grapple with the social issues Review: Raising Yourself: Making The Right Choices by Sumant Pendharkar is a book written especially for young readers ages 10 and older about the tough decisions that face teens or young adults ready to address the challenges of today and lay the groundwork for their future. Individual chapters discuss real issues such as abstinence versus causing pregnancy, the deadly effects of illegal drugs, understanding financial problems, personal values, gang membership, and more in down-to-earth, accessible language. Raising Yourself is very highly recommended reading for kids needing to grapple with the social issues, temptations, and decisions facing them today.
