Summary: Hahneman was perhaps well intentioned, but inane!
Review: Adherents of Homeopathy often speak of Hahnemann with religious reverence. This text DOES resemble a bible more than a rational treatise. Hahnemann uses the introductory chapters to deride those who don't accept his theories as god given fact. What follows are a series of 291 aphorisms in which the author elaborates on his ridiculously irrational system of therapy.

It's true that much of modern medical science, such as germ theory, was not established in Hahnemann's time and that the extant system of medicine relied too much on modalities such as bleeding and purging. But, the authors assertations that ALL illness is the result of spiritual mis-atunement and that material factors are never the cause are outlandish. The idea that symptoms should never be suppressed is dangerous! Hahnemann ascribes miraculous spiritual powers to homeopathically diluted substance. While modern proponents like to ascribe these powers to the physical properties of water, their arguments have largely been disproven (a detailed treatise would take a book in itself.

There's a reason that homeopathy plays such a minor role in medicine today. And, it has little to do with the AMA or the pharmaceutical companies. Overall, this tome should be viewed, at best, as a historical curiosity, rather than an effective system of medicine.

Summary: Steven Decker is a genius
Review: and his translation of the Organon has taken homeopathy and homeopathic prescribing light-years ahead in this work of art, edited by O'Reilly.

After a century or two of misunderstandings of Hahnemann's writings, at last there is a glimpse of Hahnemann's genial gift to mankind. I await further illumination of this medical system from Mr. Decker!

The insights I gained reading it I can only liken to religious revelations. I now have an understanding of healing and cure that will guide me for the rest of my life. O'Reilly and Decker have taken a dense work of absolute genius and made it accessible to anyone who wants to understand the meaning of health and the gift of life.

Summary: Groundbreaking in conveying the essence of Hahnemann.
Review: I found this to be one of the most comprehensive treatments of Samuel Hahnemann's groundbreaking work. It makes his masterpiece easily accessible even to a novice like me and offers great insight into the original German text. The glossary and index are indispensible additions. The effort Decker put forth in translating the original demonstrates a level of intellecual integrity and precision that even I can recognize. O'Reilly's editorial and organizational prowess is unmatched. Hahnemann would be greatly pleased by their reverant treatment of his work. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in homeopathy or alternative medicine.

Summary: The once and future science of Homeopathy
Review: I frequently return from visits to the family physician with the vague feeling that I am dealing with a very peculiar form of healing. There seems to be little sense of "the ankle bone being connected to the knee bone" in modern medicine. Millions of people have registered their opinions in this regard by visiting alternative medical practictioners. But why does alternative medicine work? What are the dynamics of its very real affects? How does the science of Homeopathy work?

Wenda O'Reilly has given us the definitive translation of the homeopathic bible, The Organon of the Medical Art and a handle on the new metaphysics that needs to be engaged for medicine to become the healing art not just of malfunction but of health. All public health officials and anyone interested in medicine should read this book. This is science rendered into beauty by art.
