Summary: Decoding the book Decoding Dreams
Review: I came across this book just after a painful divorce in the early 90's that was not prevented by several years of therapy. I was immediately attracted to the self-analysis that Dr. Langs skillfully lays out in his writing. Since money was short, this looked like the perfect answer: free, do-it-yourself therapy.

The technique advocated by Langs is simple, but not easy. I asked my therapist, a respected traditionalist who teaches at a major medical school, if he though Langs might be onto something. "It's possible," he said. "Dr. Langs is a solid professional. He has written extensively for the professional community. And he is very...and I don't mean this in a deragatory sense...very entrepreneurial." Look at the list of books here by Robert Langs and you'll get a glimpse of what is meant by entrepreneurial.

So I gave it a try. I read a few of Dr. Langs other books, and found a few of his articles in professional journals. He talks about working with patients over the telephone in some of his writing, so I even tried that for 4 sessions. (Dr. Langs requires payment for four sessions in advance. I asked him if it wasn't a problem that I'm made connection with him through his writing, something he warns against in another book of his now out of print that explains how to choose the right therapist. "Yes," he said, "that is a problem we will have to work through." He then gave me the address where I was to send the check.

The results? Well, I've decided that doing therapy on my own is not enough. I continue to struggle with the problems that were with me just after the divorce. Self-analysis helped, but not enough. I recently started seeing my therapist again. But I do think the time I've spent reading Dr. Langs and practicing self-analysis has been worthwhile. My ability to work with my doctor has been improved, and I'm more greatful than ever for the hour we spend each week talking face-to-face.
