Rating: Summary: New Book About An Old Weapon Review: In The Scourge of the Dark Continent the author has written a fundamental instructional manual on the use of the sjambok, which is a short whip made from rhinosceros hide. New versions of the sjambok are manufactured from synthetic plactic and it is these implements that the manual addresses. Typically thorough, Loriega provides the interested reader with historical background information on the sjambok before proceeding to explain how it can be used as a device for personal protection. He dedicates different chapters to its use at long range, mid range, and close quarters. Other chapters describe how the sjambok can be customized, how it should be trained with, and how to keep it readily available (whether in your house or on your person.) The manual also includes advice from whip experts James Keating and Tom Meadows, who are also well-respected instructors within the self defense community. I ordered this manual because I have enjoyed Loriega's previous works, and I was not disappointed. I only wish he had included more techniques, although that's not to say the manual would have been better. This manual should be read by everyone who owns or uses a sjambok for self-protection. Those who don't should get the manual AND a sjambok.
