Review: I've read and reread Dr. McCullough's Patient's Manual. It is I believe a partner to a very thick book on the treatment of chronic depression. There are very few effective treatments for chronic depression. He seems to have found an approach, which offers patients real and statisically real help. This Patient's Manuel is actually more a pamphlet and introduces the patient to the CBASP (Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy). When I first read the manual I couldn't make much sense out of it. It seemed too distant from my own chronic depression. The manual was not written as a self-help book or as a book explaining the tormenting aspects of depression. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a therapist who uses the CBASP Method. After several sessions with my psychologist I read the manual again. This time things started to click in and make sense. It explains and shows how certain techniques are used to address the "Global thinking" of the chronically depressed. It is helpful to understanding and work with the CBASP as a patient.
I've given it four stars, because I find the word "Manual" in the title misleading and I think the price is rather high for just 40 pages. I didn't feel that the manual prepared me for the therapy. It has, however, helped me during the therapy. This help alone is worth four stars.
