Rating: Summary: The frightening truth about the Psychiatric Industry Review: "Psychiatry: The Ultimate Betrayal" examines psychiatry from its beginnings to its current state. It dissects and evaluates the philosophy of psychiatry and the various treatments used by psychiatrists. It gives the actual facts about the results obtained by psychiatry and is a vital reference for anyone considering undergoing any type of psychiatric or psychological treatment. The book is called "The Ultimate Betrayal" for good reason. As you read you realize that this profession is not just harming under the guise of help, but is destroying minds and lives as a normal part of its activities. This is probably the best researched book I have ever read. Every fact is backed up with its source. It is well written and riveting but be prepared, Steven King is mild indeed compared to the evil of psychiatry.
Rating: Summary: Essential Info for Society Today Review: After only the first couple of chapters, I knew that Wiseman had a good grasp of his subject. He has some well-documented facts about how psychiatry is not at all what it claims to be. It is indeed one of the worst betrayals in history. The very group of people who are supposed to be helping people get better are actually making them worse! Wiseman makes very valid points such as, if psychiatry is so effective why is it psychiatrists have the highest: suicide rates divorce rates alcoholism rates ? Wiseman makes some pretty shocking statements, but I think the are vital to hear -- and he backs them up with good quality documentation. I've studied the validity of psychology/psychiatry for a few years now and I've come to the same conclusion Wiseman did: It's the biggest farce that has ever been perpetrated on human beings. Get this book and be wise, not a mere sheep who believes what the media is trying to feed you.
Rating: Summary: The pathetic rant of a Scientologist nut Review: From crazed accusations that psychiatry created Hitler to hysterical allegations that psychiatry is responsible for pretty much all crime, war, drug abuse, the cancellation of Star Trek, etc., this twisted, stream-of-consciousness rant is the most perfect example there is of the true delusional madness of L. Ron Hubbard's Scientology cult, of which author Bruce Wiseman is a fanatical member. So I'd give it five stars for humor value, but for factual value, I regret only there is no choice to rate with negative numbers.
Rating: Summary: Psychiatry Kills Review: I don't believe that I have ever read a more thoroughly researched expose in my life. Virtually every point made by the author is backed up by a wealth of documentation. You cannot read this book without wondering why the problem of psychiatry has not been addressed in this country before. This book should be required reading in all Psychology 1A courses in the universities!
Rating: Summary: Psychiatry? Better Think Again! Review: I worry about kids being drugged in schools today and i hope the message in this book gets to more and more people. There's so many illegal drugs out there to worry about already This book is shocking and important Thank you
Rating: Summary: Psychiatry Kills Review: Reading this book made me feel good, like I had just taken a two week vacation in Hawaii. Why is that? You'll have to read it and find out for yourself. Psychiatry is a non-scientific profession that offers no real lasting solutions for problems people or society experience. There is a real reason for the demise of it's so-called popularity, yet government's still continue to use it to punish the population. The book explores how psychiatry grafted itself onto government support, and how it continues to be well connected to media and government sponsorhip and how it has intruded into the educational system and legal system. Anything invaded by psychiatric ideas [mental virus] seems to get worse and have more problems then ever. You'll read some things that I'll bet you didn't know had originated from psychiatry! Life doesn't have to be filled with fear, pain and unhappiness, that is, unless you're a psychiatrist harming people while pretending to 'help' them with unworkable technology . This book is one of the most excellent written and researched studies of psychiatry. It should be required reading for all students, not just those studying to become doctors! Oh yes, it should be required reading for every newly married couple. If you want to increase your chances of a successful marriage and have fewer problems with your children, read this book!
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly documents the dark side of psychiatry Review: The author unleashes a devastating attack on the myriad failings of psychiatry (particularly American psychiatry). He details the human rights abuses, the fraud that has robbed our government and insurance companies of billions of dollars, the precipitous decline in our public schools, the very real problems suffered by many who are "sold" on psychiatric drugs, and many other things. We live in a time when millions of children are told they have a brain disorder called "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder," or ADHD (even though it has not been scientifically proven that ADHD is a legitimate physiological problem) and need to take Ritalin,Adderall, or other similar drugs (which have a high potential for abuse). This of course absolves the parents, schools, and even the children of their part in kids' school difficulties and behavioral problems. It's a classic example of the reductionism of biological psychiatry. Also, no book about psychiatry's problems would be complete without an examination of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the bible of American psychiatry. The author brilliantly describes the subjectiveness of the DSM, and the political manuevering involved in deciding what gets officially labeled as a "mental disorder" (and thus eligible for insurance coverage). He makes several references to Dr. Paula Caplan and her book about this subject, "They Say You're Crazy." Some people attack this book because it was published by the CCHR, which is affiliated with Scientology. But let me state for the record that I am not a Scientologist; I'm an Episcopalian who also is deeply influenced by Buddhism and Eastern mysticism. And the book doesn't use footnotes to refer to any books by L. Ron Hubbard, who created Scientology and Dianetics; the footnotes refer to other books (including those by Thomas Szasz and other psychiatrists), newspaper and magazine articles, and U. S. government documents. Anybody who approaches this book with an open mind will have to admit that there is a lot of merit in it. My only criticism is that Mr. Wiseman paints with too broad a brush. He doesn't acknowledge the contributions of people like Dr. Albert Ellis, the New York psychologist who pioneered the cognitive psychology revolution and created Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), which later became Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Dr. Ellis strongly advocates people accepting responsibility for their lives, just as Mr. Wiseman advocates. As a matter of fact, Dr. Ellis refers to REBT as "no copout therapy." In an era when so many people refuse to accept personal responsibility, it's refreshing to see people like Drs. Albert Ellis, David D. Burns and Aaron T. Beck; all are mental health professionals who emphasize the cognitive aspect of emotional pain (i.e., our disturbing emotions are created not by the things that happen to us, but the way we think about them). Also, Dr. Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist who survived the Nazi concentration camps, and his system of psychotherapy (which he called Logotherapy) emphasized humanity's freedom to choose the attitude they would take in facing all of life's problems. In spite of this criticism of Wiseman's book, there is so much hear that needs to be said. Psychiatry is largely pseudoscience, instead of legitimate science, and needs to be taken to task for its intellectual weaknesses and ideological biases. Anybody who wants to be a psychiatrist or therapist should be required to read this excellent book.
Rating: Summary: Startling! Chilling! This is "must know" information. Review: This book is a chilling look at the truth about the subject of psychiatry. It strips away the hudreds-of-millions of dollars of public-relations-hype that gives us a false (but comforting) picture of psychiatry, and reveales it for what it really is - the most destructive force in western civilization today. Certainly psychiatry is a "wolf in sheeps clothing", but perhaps if there really is a devil, psychiatry is his network for bringing degredation and destruction to mankind. The author has done an excellent job of ignoring the public-relations picture, to reveal the very destructive results continually produced by this insidious subject. This book is a "must read" for everyone who wants to help ensure the preservation of freedom, western culture and the "American way of life".
Rating: Summary: Chilling and awakening. Review: This excellently researched and lucidly written dissection of the development and activities of the Psychiatric establishment was immediately a favorite. If Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward met Stephen King and pursued the trail of madness and subsidized chaos they could not have surpassed Mr. Wiseman's straightforward and gripping exposition of the development of influence and and power by the Psyciatric elite. Here he lays out clearly the methods in creating madness, subsidy and more madness. I cannot recommend this highly enough as an enjoyable and enlightening addition to the aware and concerned person's library.
