Summary: This is a must have life manual for all!
Review: I just want to give the authors of Sister Gumbo praise for such a wonderful and timely book! It is truly an awesome read! I have truly been blessed by each of the stories in Sister Gumbo. I am an avid reader and this book is completely different from any other book I've ever read. What I like most is that I can relate to so much of the women's experiences in the book. The stories are so candid that you begin to feel like you know the people in the book. I also love the way they describe in such great detail the women, places, meals, homes etc. When I read the book, I felt like my mother was right there giving me advice on life. In fact, it's filled with perfect advice for someone like me (a 30-something) who actively dates and hopes to get married and have children one day. Sister Gumbo is a must have "life manual' for sisters ages 21-90! Thanks again for such a great book. I wish the authors continued success with the book and I look forward to the next!

Summary: Off the hook
Review: Although this book is real life, it was enough to make you blush in some of the areas. This book is off the hook!! I truly enjoyed reading about the various ladies lives in the book. I also enjoyed the advice they gave as well because there's always something you can learn. But when they spoke on the love lives and affairs, well, it was enough to give Ms Zane a run for her money. These ladies didn't play one bit. But all in all, the book is real good and is good for gifts. Highly recommended.

Summary: A Gumbo of Hot and Spicy Vignettes
Review: Being a Black woman and negotiating our way in the world is what the authors, two sisters, Ursula Inga Kindred and Mirranda Guerin-Williams, attempted to communicate. How we feel about ourselves, our families, our relationships. So they set out to interview dozens of women to find out just what makes us tick. They found women who were willing to tell it like it is, straight, no chaser and uncensored.

While traditionally Black women have upheld Black men in their distress, today's woman is not always willing to nurse a man's wounded ego or insecurities at the expense of sacrificing her career or her heart. Ayoka, a professional woman, decided to end her frustrating marriage when it became apparent her husband had ongoing issues about the money she made and how she spent it.

Other topics covered are childhood, sex, dating, motherhood and friendship among other topics; all told in the women's own insightful words. There were discussions about the joy of motherhood and the pain of finding out their husbands cheated on them. One woman found out the woman next door, who was supposedly her friend, was having an affair with her husband. Others though were very candid about their own infidelities as well as dating married men. One particularly laugh out loud discourse had this reviewer just shaking my head at some of the antics. One woman told how she became angry at her married lover for buying his wife a new house and then when she found out he was cheating on her with yet another woman went to that woman's house and defaced his car.

There is a detailed section about sex, the first time, what kind, how women want it, and sex vs. making love. Self-image and self-esteem; how these women view themselves and the trials of finding themselves are discussed with candor. The recipes sprinkled throughout the text were an added bonus as the authors likened recipes for food to recipes for life. These recipes were culled straight from their mother's Louisiana kitchen. Gumbo and crawfish etouffee' were two of the mouth-watering treats that were symbolic of the spicy wit and frankness exhibited by bold and beautiful Sisters

The authors wrote a short introduction and closing but I would have liked to see more of their own comments. However, this is a worthwhile book and I recommend to all women if only to find out how other women think and feel.

Summary: A book you'll love if you've ever talked girl talk.
Review: I bought this book on Saturday afternoon and had completed it by Sunday afternoon. It was fun reading it. I can remember talking about the subjects in the book, but only with very intimate friends. Miss Nora reminded me of women I knew when I was a young woman. Her advice and experiences brought back memories of my best friend's aunt. I plan to buy more copies of this book for friends and family -- that includes the men too. I can't wait until the next book is published. I would love to hear men's responses to the same questions.

Summary: Great
Review: I read this within a couple of hours. It was that good. This book is about a couple of women who tell their life stories in the sections described. I really enjoyed reading about the ladies lives and all, and the advice. And when they talked about the sex and all, it was truly off the hook. They didn't no details out at all. Great for those searching and as a great gift for those on the road of life.

Summary: Sister Gumbo: A PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review
Review: Real-life sisters Ursula Kindred and Mirranda Guerin -Williams from Baton Rouge have put together a delightful potpourri of vignettes from Black women on a number of topics including life, sex, relationships, marriage, dating and friendship. The women they interviewed spoke candidly about motherhood, aging, and affairs. Self-image, spirituality in orderly well-arranged chapters. I just wish that they had asked specific questions or asked for more details in the little short stories that the women tell.

I enjoyed the stories and learned a lot about life in general. I also
Learned what my sisters are thinking and how they are living their lives.
I could easily relate to many of the stories and saw myself in these
Woman more than I'd care to admit. The book was a real delight though.
An added bonus were the Southern/Louisiana-style recipes that were
Sprinkled between the chapters.

The mix of women was a broad spectrum of African American women today
With several generations of women represented. They had varied
Personalities; interests and gifts. The authors allowed them to speak
Randomly about the topic. The women were candid and outspoken about
Telling their stories. The authors call this the Gumbo of our lives and
That our individual experiences enables each of us to create our
Very own personalized gumbo.

Sister Gumbo could be considered a women's self-help book but I would
Like to categorize it as a book of women's stories. I must admit; it took
Awhile for me to finish this book I would put it down from time to time
And read the stories while reading other books. But I always came
Back to it and the stories refreshed my spirit on a not-so-good-day.
I think it was a project well done and I'd rate this book a four because
The authors accomplished what they set out to do in this book and it was done well.
I am looking forward to their next book, Mister Gumbo. Reviewed by Idrissa U.
