Rating: Summary: Comforting and Practical Review: I read Pat Nowak's book and ordered one more book to keep on hand ...just in case. I did send The ABC's of Widowhood to a dear friend who lost her fifty year old husband to cancer. She thought the book was wonderful. She keeps on it her night stand and finds it to be comforting with practical insights. I am going to order more to keep on hand. Just in case...
Rating: Summary: The ABCs of Widowhood Review: Needing a break in my work day, I picked up The ABCs of Widowhood to read just a few pages. Several hours later I forced myself to stop reading and return to my work. I am not a widow, nor does it seem to be looming on the horizon, but I sure wish I'd had this book to share both with my mother and mother-in-law when they were all of a sudden alone. Ms. Nowak interjected enough of her story to make me want more. She provides information that she wishes she had at her fingertips when her husband tragically lost his life. The book is NOT just for new widows, but also for the more seasoned widow, the children of widows (to understand what mom is going through) and every woman who could become a widow in the future.
Rating: Summary: Hits Nail on the Head Review: Pat Nowak's personal story is striking and ensures the advice she gives is expert. The terms she defines are easy to understand and implement. There is no need to read front to back, pick a letter of the alphabet & start there. She is not preachy at all, but gives practical advice on how to start the survival process BEFORE becoming a widow, and certainly how to survive once you are. Thankfully my husband is still with me, but I've already started making changes to ensure I will survive if he preceeds me. I'll also suggest changes for my parents since my dad has already had major heart surgery. This is a 'must' gift for my widowed aunts who are still struggling. Thanks Pat for sharing your story, and for helping the rest of us be better prepared for the unthinkable. MEN: This information is good for you too. Read it to help prepare your wife for the transition if you go first AND the advice is good for you too if she should preceed you. Get things in order NOW!! Make it easier no matter who goes first.
