Rating: Summary: much-needed theory for bodywork Review: An extremely articulate and thoughtful work that provides a much-needed framework for understanding how psychotherapy emphasizing the body is (or can be) effective. There is still a paucity of meaningful theoretical writing on this theme. Excellent.

Rating: Summary: a college student w/an interest in Reichian works Review: Intended as a textbook for professionals and students of Reichian bodywork, "The Body in Recovery", offers the most comprehensive overview of up-to-date techniques and exercises I've seen in print anywhere. However, the text lacks illustrations, which may frustrate some readers who find it difficult to imagine some of the techniques and exercises being described. Conger shows himself, by far, the most thoughtful and original integrationist of various psychotherapeutic approaches with a body-oriented model. Unlike other bioenergetists, (M. Brown, J. Pierrakos) who seem to go off in mystical directions and add little to Lowen and Reich's fundamental understanding of the body as the center of growth and change, there can be no question of where Conger stands.
