Rating: Summary: Conquered a Triathalon using discipline Review: Great Book - This book has been effective for me both personally as well as professionally.
Last week, I was running the Long Beach Triathalon. The swim and bike went well, but the run at the end was another story - I struggled until my mind went back to the concepts of this book. I started chanting in my mind "Discipline Discpline DISCIPLINE". Before I knew it, I was crossing the finish line with a great time and my attitiude where it needed to be.
Rating: Summary: Just Do it Review: Harris has given us the tools to succeed; in whatever course we take. Self-discipline is hard but it beats having someone else do it for us.
In this book, Harris uses his own experiences as well as others to show us the way and the benefits of self-motivation & setting goals. Being disciplined may mean different things to different people. This book simplifies how anybody can improve his or her life by improving how they schedule their time and daily routine. Set goals and just do whatever it takes to achieve them. He also lists his favorite sayings, I have one that I think he would like, "Lead, Follow or get the ____ out of the way". Harris is the leader on this subject & I am happy to follow.
Rating: Summary: Betting on improvement? Take this one to the bank. Review: Harris Kern, well known for his series of best-selling books on managing information technology environments, turns his writing talents to more practical matters by showing us how to unleash our hidden potential by acquiring Discipline. Harris pulls no punches in stating flat out that acquiring Discipline takes hard work and considerable effort. There is no sugar coating on the nuggets of wisdom he shares...nor should there be. Those who are weak-willed or easily intimidated may find the early going of this book a tough pill to swallow, but if you are serious about improving various aspects of your life, be it physical, financial, emotional, or professional, this book is the perfect choice. Harris weaves a semi-autobiographic sketch of his life that effectively supports his claim that true excellence in most any endeavor is based on the cornerstone of discipline. From making mental contracts, to learning to say no, this book is loaded with colorful examples and memorable anecdotes on just how successful the use of discipline can be. There are few guarantees in life, but applying the six steps in this book to acquire success is one of the safest bets you will ever make.
Rating: Summary: If there is a will, there is a way Review: I thoroghly enjoyed reading this book because I felt I could relate to so much of the content. The determination and focus that is needed in accomplishing whatever one decides to delve into is really emphasized in this reading. Harris is a great inspiration to people especially ones that lack self confidence and need to be motivated.
I really got a lot out of some of the personal goals that Harris set forth in his quest to being the person that he ultimately is today: a relentless, driving, non-stop and willing to do whataever it takes kind of person. The explanation of how he worked up to a great success with his car accomplshments describes such determination.
Sharing the positive energy with others is so satisfying and I really can relate to that. I really pride myself on the people I choose to spend my life with and I offer whatever I can to better their situation and in relation to mine as well. Harris describes this type of behavior with people he was employed with and to give them more self confidence and self esteem. It is truely a wonderful thing when you can see the results.
The book is a great book to read and certainly can open up ones eyes to many things around them. I highly recommend this for everyone.
Good work Harris!

Rating: Summary: Kern unleashes the ultimate dragon of self-motivation. Review: In his book Discipline: Six Steps to Unleashing Your Hidden Potential, author Harris Kern addresses the importance of goal setting and the most important principle for accomplishing those goals and achieving ultimate success: discipline. The text is straightforward and easy to absorb, it flows almost effortlessly through the open-minded reader (it took me a mere 5 hours to read it twice). More importantly perhaps than his writing style, Kern takes on the role of a demanding mentor - one who takes your success seriously and wants you to stop at nothing to reach it. The stories and examples from his personal quest for discipline are a true inspiration (although you're sometimes left thinking "This can't be healthy..."), and create a model for drive and relentlessness in pursuit of success that's easy to recall long after you put the book away. It has helped me, for one, to fight complacency that much harder at times when desperation and failure are just around the corner. In essence, his message creates a "broken record" of self-motivation that never fails to skip right back to the part that says "Get up off the floor and act... right now!"
To the person who is willing to undergo a change for the better, that broken record is all that's needed to create the motion which will ultimately propel him/her towards unleashing their hidden potential.
If you've ever in your life set a goal, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Latte, mocha , chai...blah. Try a Discipline shot in the a.m Review: Never get enough accomplished in a day? Too hard to gain focus in your life? Rating: Summary: Discipline Review: Same old Harris! I have known Harris for nearly 20 years and his books read just like he is talking directly to you. His message is clear. Take control of your life. Even if you don't commit yourself as fully as Harris does (few people ever will), the basic steps will help you improve your life if you want to. Thank you for writing this book. You have provided me and others with a simple set of directions to remind us to keep focus and priorities. Thank you for the inspiration!
