Rating: Summary: The best book available on pranayama technique Review: In my opinion, this is the best book available anywhere for the serious yoga student who wants to master yogic breathing techniques. It is even better than Light on Pranayama by Iyengar. The first and third parts of the book focus on some ancient pranayama philosophy, to which Western readers may or may not wish to subscribe. But most of the book is a fabulous practical guide to virtually all the breathing methods. Included as well are proper sitting postures, mudras (hand positions), and bandhas (anatomical locks to maximize results), all well illustrated. Unlike some books on the subject, this one does not shy away from describing khumbaka, or breath retention. It is the key to controlling the tendency of the mind to jump from thought to thought (although the author warns to attempt khumbaka only with expert guidance). If you think Yoga is merely an exercise routine, as seen on U.S. TV, this book will take you to the next level. Hatha yoga is more about breathing than stretching. This book can improve your life -- really.
