Rating: Summary: The Worst, Most Useless book on Yoga I've had my hands on Review: Before buying a good based on the subject only I read the reviews Amazon.com publishes. Usually they have been very useful. Not the case with Shakti Parwha's "Kundalini Yoga". Most reviewers have only good words about it. I am offended with the book. It is poor, boring, tiresome. It is not practical (very little in it is promptly applicable), it is not solid in theory. It is a complete mystification of Kundalini Yoga (or any form of Yoga, for that matter). For the first time I felt completely misguided by the reviewers' opinion on Amazon.com. My recommendation is: DON'T BUY this book. Buy any other, but not this one. I am new to Yoga, but I've felt so many benefits doing it that I wouldn't like to see any one abandoning it before starting because of a book like this one.
Rating: Summary: A Book That Truly Lets The Light In - Enlightenment. Review: I have 33 books on Kundalini and Chakras and over 52 books alone on yoga in my library. This is by far one of the best and easiest to read. It is full of sacred kriyas and mantras that you cannot buy at any price. I know because I have been teaching and studying all types of yoga and meditation for over 25 years. All one needs to do is practice these sacred techniques to become Enlightened and as a side effect you will become infinitely Healthy, Happy, and Whole. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: A real disappointment Review: I have been practicing kundalini yoga for 5 years and hate to say anything bad about it, because I have benefitted so much from it. But this is a truly awful book. It is ANNOYING -- full of condescencing 6th grade reading level New Age chirpy cheerleader drivel. It is also a flood of things to do (with poor explanation of why other than "because Yogi Bhajan said so"), with little framework for navigating what works for YOU.In contrast, any book by Ravi Singh is GREAT.
Rating: Summary: hmmmmmm Review: i wrote a too lengthy review of this book a couple years ago yet Amazon.com printed my review..i see it's not here now!! ... this book gives some good physical practices like 'breath of fire' but gives so much horrid sociological and historical and philosophical information it's astounding..Indians lost because they smoked marijuana..dreams aren't helpful..ya gotta not eat sugar, caffeine etc. to make guru status..gotta get up at certain times in the morning and take cold showers? ... whew, all in all this book has an attractive cover but is an ugly piece of work...john
Rating: Summary: Not what I expected, but pleased nonetheless Review: It's hard buying books when you don't have the opportunity to flip through them first. Honestly, if I found this in the local bookstore I probably would not have chosen it. I was expecting something more academic or pragmatic and the style of this book is so laid back and free flowing. Despite myself, I've come to appreciate the format. It's joyful and light, with lots of illustrations and cartoon like drawings in the margins. It does give some good information specifically for women, which is why I wanted this book in the first place. Lots of books about yoga or Eastern philosophy forget that all that is good for men is not necesarily beneficial for women, and this book makes a point to make this clear. Also, a suprise: good foot massage diagrams and the yogi tea recipe. If one is looking specifically for info about Kundalini or yoga, this may not be the best book for left brained information. It is however, an enjoyable book that includes helpful information about all aspects of life, from waking in the morning to broaching the mystery of death.
Rating: Summary: not so impressed Review: so i heard about kundalini yoga from a friend in my composition class... i'd been practicing meditation for about a year and a half at this time and was looking for something new... I didn't like the life-denying view that some of the schools seemed to take, nor their meditations. kundalini yoga, as i was informed, and later read, was meant to let you live a life in the body to its fullest potential, using everything, all situations, to your advantage. that's what attracted me to it. that's what attracted me to tantra as a whole. so i got this book, read it, and was rather disappointed to tell you the truth. the exercises, i will admit, are well detailed. the philosophy behind kunalini yoga is laid out well. all of the mantras are there. but still, something is lacking. other reviewers speak of her free-flowing style, and, while it may seem free-flowing, it clearly isn't. It's nothing at all like reading the works of enlightened masters. rather than clarifying, in my opinion some of the more esoteric aspects of the yoga, she seems to muddy them up a bit. this, perhaps, is because she lacks the depth of insight of someone who has arrived and, therefore, the information she gives on various aspects of kundalini yoga are things that she has read or heard, not things she expereinced firsthand. to sum it all up, i certainly wouldn't recommend this book. it is, i will admit, good for the body, as the exercises are well-detailed and laid out in an easy-to-read manner. for the mind, though, it is definitely lacking. i would recommend a book by osho called "the book of secrets" for actual meditation methods. combining this one and that could benifit one greatly.
Rating: Summary: great introduction! Review: So many books on Kundalini Yoga are bogged down with confusing information and subject matter that it can discourage most students. This book is excellent for both beginning and advanced students. It contains a wealth of information put together in a loose, light-hearted, and easy to understand format. You get everything here: philosophy, exercises, breathing techniques, mantras, cooking recipes. Regarding several criticisms I've seen of this book - I'd have to say please remember that this teacher is one of Yogi Bhajan's first students, and she may occasionally speak from a different generation then we're used to. It's not necessary to agree with every last sentance of the book to benefit from it. I recommend this inspiring book to anyone intrested in improving their life and learning more about Kundalini Yoga!
Rating: Summary: Focus on the exercises... Review: This is a simple reminder what Yoga, Sanskrit for Union, really is. It is a relief from the Pop Yoga that has been "infiltrating" the main stream--watered down so as to be palatable by the masses. It reminds the reader that yoga is for the body, mind, and spirit--not just a physical low-impact exercise. This is easy but informative reading.
