Summary: Change my Life forever
Review: First of all, Thank you Nancy Appleton for changing my life forever with this one book.... Now that I know the Truth, I have changed my ways to a healthier and happy lifestyle. I have gone back to college and am holding down a professional job... I am 24 years old and about 6 months ago I picked up this book. I used to be a drug addict, alcoholic, and sugarholic(first from childhood) I never knew what it meant to be truly healthy until I cut down sugar consumption... I have very few friends now---You wanna know why? Because most everybody you meet in this country is a sugar addict. You don't believe me? Go anywhere/anytown USA and just watch people's eating habits and count how many bars there are.. What a sad state of affair we live in.. We don't need no devil to destroy us(figuratively speaking) we just need the <damn> sugar. Most everything people do revolves around this sad drug. When will we ever learn? And for all you one star reviewing sad people- maybe the truth hurt just a little too much. And by the way, Nancy does talk about air pollution and other things that effect our bodies(homeostasis). Read the book before you right a false statement. I made the decision to change my life to health. Maybe you will too..

Summary: Amazing and well-documented information!
Review: For thirty years, I have been studying nutrition as a personal interest. I own dozens of books on the subject as well as having taken a college course. I can honestly say that I consider LICK THE SUGAR HABIT to be one of my most valued possessions. You will find eye-opening information here that's hard to come by in the mainstream press. Appleton's documentation is excellent, as she draws on many sources, including many scientific journals, to back up her statements. Her personal story of how she regained her health is fascinating as well. This book is much more solidly based on science than Duffy's SUGAR BLUES. Until I read it, I never dreamed excess sugar could be the cause of so many ills, including accelerated aging. By acting on what I learned, I've been amazed at how my allergy symptoms have cleared up, my emotions have stabilized, and I seem to be spared the "bugs" that plague my family and friends(I used to be hit hard by every germ that came along).

Summary: A nutritional topic you shouldn't miss
Review: I appreciate Nancy Appleton's passion in this area of diet. Education in the dangers of excessive sugar is much needed in our society. But at times she can get a bit extreme. She seems to blame nearly every ill on sugar intake and sometimes lacks the science to back up her claims. But the premise of the book is right on. I have greatly reduced the amount of sugar in my diet and have noticably better health because of it. I have more energy and strength, and no more headaches or stomachaches. It definately gives one an incentive to rethink the average American diet.

Summary: sugar and its terrible effects on the body
Review: I read this book about 1 year ago, and since then I have made major changes in my diet, following many of the suggestions in the book. It is amazing what a difference sugar makes in your health and energy level. I used to have at least 2 and sometimes 7 hypoglycemic attacks a week. I now haven't had one in over 10 months! If you have a sugar addiction, hypoglycemia, or diabetes I suggest this book highly!!! Even if you just want to improve your immune system and not get sick as much, this book is for you. I have been striving for better health since I was 6 months pregnant, and this was one of a few integral books in my success.

Summary: A Good Beginning for Those Who Wish to Change
Review: It appears as though some of us take a while longer to convince than others. Dr. Appleton, although directing her book at the mass market, has an excellent publication warning us about the dangers of sugar. I'm beginning to believe what she wrote. I have noticed some undesirable effects of consuming too much sugar take hold of my life, such as spontaneous anger and seemingly inexplicable bouts of a lost temper. I have also noticed, since I have effected drastic reductions in my sugar intake, better periods of sleep, less disturbing dreams, a more positive outlook, fewer toothaches and fewer headaches. So, in conjunction with our author, the body does, indeed, seem to have a predetermined setpoint at which the body does not like to exceed its sugar intake. Then, full of glucagon and a massive induction of insulin into the bloodstream, the blood sugar surges and spikes, and sends the moods swinging wildly. Forget it. I'm tired of feeling that way. I've started a new beginning in 2004, with the help of this and other books, it appears as though excessive sugar in the blood is far more dangerous than first realized.

Summary: Unconvincing personal vendetta
Review: Nancy Appleton has clearly declared her personal agenda against sugar, but her lack of objectivity, organization, credibility, or substance leave much to be desired in this book. I was frustrated by the constant repetition throughout the text, and I found myself skipping paragraphs at a time to find any new information. In addition, I was hoping to find concrete, applicable suggestions on HOW to kick the sugar habit. While Dr. Appleton does attempt to include "food plans," they are simply lists of the good, the bad, and the ugly. I do NOT recommend this book to others.

Summary: Think about it!
Review: Nancy is onto something here. If you do just a little bit of research into the beginnings of cardiovascular diseases in the United States you will find a correlation between sugar and heart disease. Prior to the 1940's heart disease was not common then refined sugar hit the market, processed foods became readily available, and the fast food industry took off. Everyone claims that heart disease is caused by cholesterol from eating animal fats but consider the diet of the Eskimo. They eat a diet that is almost exclusively meat and fish and the rate of heart disease among Eskimos is shockingly lower than the rest of us. Why? They don't eat sugar. Constrastingly, India has the highest rate of heart disease and the majority of them are vegetarians! Why? Because too much sugary sweets!! Think about it !!

Summary: This Book Can Inspire You!
Review: This book is more than just about sugar and mineral imbalance. So what if she is not a doctor? A PhD is useless? You don't have to study medicine to read reports in medical journals about the effects of refined sugar on your health. One reviewer complains about the subject of pollution not being in her book. Why? The book is about sugar, not pollution.
