Rating: Summary: Better Than A Massage Class Review: "The Massage Book" is a classic for good reason. Everything you need to know in order to give a truly outstanding, tension-releasing full-body massage is covered in the book. It begins with concise information on practicalities such as what type (and how much) oil to use, and how to work at a massage table without becoming sore or tired. Don't have a table? No problem. This book shows how to use the floor, or build a basic portable table if you're so inclined. The author does not cover specialized techniques such as deep tissue work or shiatsu, which require professional training (to avoid injuring). The style presented in "The Massage Book" is one which is used by a large percentage of professional massage therapists to produce a deeply satisfying, relaxing massage. The main body of the book is a well-written and illustrated set of instructions covering approximately eighty massage strokes. The instructions are exceptionally clear and easy to follow. Important: you'll learn how to hold your friend's body so their limbs do not flap about as you lift them to move through the strokes. You can apply the strokes in the exact order they are presented, or mix them differently. The techniques presented have served me well for the past fifteen years. My massage therapist friends beg me to work on them. Learn from this book, and you too can have the power to make otherwise rational humans beg and drool for your attentions.

Rating: Summary: Good starting place. Review: I consider this an old classic. It offers up more than adequate background and plenty of helpful hints and details. Your spouse/friends will love you for learning these techniques. It's a bargain.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive and well-illustrated Review: I was very happy to find this book still available (and in a 25th Anniversary edition too). This was THE book that refined my massage skills about 15 years ago and its techniques have met with great approval from those that I've applied them to. If you're serious about massage, this is one book that I strongly recommend for your library.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good...not a fan of the illustrations, though Review: I'm of mixed opinions about this book, but it may only be that my personal preference makes me biased. I truly did get quite a bit out of the written explanations, but feel that the hand-drawn illustrations leave a bit to be desired. This was the first book of massage that I purchased, (I'm merely an amateur, but I'm very interested in the subject) I've since bought many other books that I feel were much more helpful, simply because they combined equally good written explanations with full color photos, which I feel convey the author's meaning much more clearly. However, this may be purely my own aesthetic taste, as the written work is still very good.

Rating: Summary: THE ......massage book Review: If you have never done massage before and pick up this book you can learn to do it easily. If you have learnt massage before and pick up this book you will learn more. Not only are the descriptions clear and simple but the illustrations show you clearly how to do even the more complex massage strokes. On top off all that the book is written in an informative but not dictarial manner. Downing describes techniques and approaches and lets you (and your massage partner) make an informed choice as to how you will do it. I learnt massage from this book along with many other people. A highly recommended purchase.
Rating: Summary: No better book on the subject, anywhere. Review: Is there a better book on how to give a massage? I think not. I bought my first copy of this book in 1976 and have replaced it twice (people keep borrowing it and moving away!). In 23 years of practicing massage on my friends and family I have yet to find a book that teaches more clearly. Anne Kent Rush's illustrations and George Downing's words are perfect compliments for each other. I have given this book as a gift countless times over the years and each time my thoughtfulness has been appreciated with repeated "thank yous" as they learn just how wonderful massage can be. Buy this book! Quickly!
Rating: Summary: Thorough classic Review: This book has been both an excellent instructional aid for massage, and a springboard for mastering more advanced topics. It covers the basic strokes and sequences very well and teaches technique that I have applied to other areas of massage such as deep tissue, shiatsu, reflexology, and accupressure. I first used this book 7 years ago and it has brought fabulous results in both personal life and in social college settings. I highly recommend this as a first book of massage.
Rating: Summary: This is THE massage book i recommend to everyone. Review: This is the book from which i learned massage back in the early 70's, and i made many of my friends happy applying what i learned. It's clear, complete, and easy to follow. The line drawings provide clearer illustration of the techniques presented than photos would. I definitely recommend this book as a starting point for anyone.
