Rating: Summary: User's Manual for the Brain! Review: Starting with the deliberately ambiguous title, what you get in this book is pure Bandler. Not surprising, really, since the text is an edited version of several seminars Bandler conducted in 1982. It seems to me that you can treat the book as an educational exercise, or as an interactive experience. Indeed, the editing is so effective that I could imagine myself strolling through town letting Bandler show me the world through his eyes, listen to it with his ears, and so on. And a mightily enjoyable experience it was. At the surface level the book covers topics such as submodalities, learning, the "swish" pattern, etc. - keeping in mind how much of our experience is objective, and how much is subjective. Better yet, having pointed out that the majority of our experience subjective - it goes on to explain how we can radically change our lives for the better by "reprogramming" the bits we don't like. Personally I found this to be an excellent book on the subject, with plenty of amusing and relevant cartoons by Gustav Russ Youngreen, and practical exercises and demonstrations throughout. With regard to the difficulties mentioned by other reviewers, I would say that there are plenty of guys doing what Abby describes who wouldn't know NLP from a hole in the ground. It is also worth pointing out that NLP is, after all, just another tool. And like any other tool, *some* people are bound to misuse it. As for whether you can become proficient in NLP just by attending one or two trainings and reading some books, I agree - you can't. And if you tell yourself that you don't understand, then you won't (that, too, is "reprogramming"!) Like any other subject, you will only "learn" NLP when you "do" it. So anyone who thinks that reading this book, or any other, will make them into a master communicator overnight would probably be better off saving their money. For readers who take the book in the spirit in which it was written, on the other hand, I'd guess you may find this a very enjoyable and beneficial addition to your bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: It takes a brain to use a brain Review: And that's exactly the point of this book. At times, much like beating a dead horse, Bandler states the obvious over and over (and over) again, but oddly enough, it's not boring at all. Kind of like a favorite uncle who tells you the same war story each time you see him, but with a slightly different spin, so you sit there en"tranced" and become a willing subject to his yarn. This in no way diminishes the value of this book. Anyone who has ever read Bandler knows that he is a master of communication. What he teaches is .. so are you. You just don't realize it yet!
Rating: Summary: Bandler at his best Review: As an NLP trainer, I think I have read most of the books out there, including most of Bandler and Grinder have written. The first books are dry but informative, then come the gems like "Transformation", and "Reframing", and those are a challenge unless you already know some NLP. This book is wonderful. It is an easy read, Bandler is spot on with his insights, and he give plenty of practical applications. I read this book many years ago and enjoyed it. I just reread it and was delighted in all the information this book packs between its cover. You will want this book on your shelf if this type of information interests you and maybe even if you don't!

Rating: Summary: DUH! Review: I actually really liked the book but didnt really gleam any information that helped me out. However, I've been avidly studying self hypnosis for about a year. I'm sure this book has the potential to help alot of people. For example if you have a relative that is kind of crazy and you would like to see why or try to fix them yourself this book might be for you. Or if your making yourself crazy with bad memories or something similar then by all means buy this book. I however didnt really get anything from this book but an interesting read. If you really want to use your brain for a change try "Effective Self Hypnosis:Pathways to the Unconcious" by C. Alexander Simpkins, If your looking to tap the unconcious to acheive amazing results this book will teach you how to do it. You may scoff at the price tag but buck it up and pay it, trust me you'll be glad you did.
Rating: Summary: Overated Review: I didn't find this book or NLP to be worth all the excitement it receives. Some of the exercises, I found hard to do: like imagining I am in the control booth of a theater, watching myself watch myself on the screen; or running a movie of my memory backwards. Since these two techniques seem to be the basis of his approach I was less than satisfied with the material. Other techniques he offers are making a memory larger, or brighter, faster, or clearer, or just the opposite: smaller, dimmer, slower, or fuzzy. I found this all to be somewhat difficult to do and not really about changing how I think about something. For instance, if I have a bad memory that I want to stop from harming me today, it isn't so much the memory that bothers me but how I think about it. So changing the way I remember it be it faster or slower or dimmer or brighter, isn't the same thing as changing how I think about it or the fact that I continue to think about it at all, if I'd rather not. Ovearll, this book did not offer anything extraordinary in my opinion. It did however from time to time offer a few interesting insights into how we think: for instance, we remember the very things we want to forget, and forget the very things we want to remember. This, and other little tidbits were interesting food for thought, ....

Rating: Summary: NLP and what it can do to you Review: I know someone who uses NLP. And I think everyone should know the dangers of it. The man that uses it, would speak in a way that you would be in a trance, and tell him stuff that you wouldn't dream of telling anyone else. He uses NLP to 'con' people out of things. For example he lives in a condo for free, quite a few people have given him new cars, people give him money all the time. And the people who give him this stuff are ALWAYS women, because they find him actractive in a way that they think they're husbands can not fufill with them. But the truth of the matter is they are in a trance by him and they really don't know what they are doing. People have gotten divorces because of this man and his NLP. And so few people know about it that they have no idea what they are doing. I am writing this because I want people to know the dangers of NLP. (Beware of wolves in sheeps clothing)! Thank you Abby Feiler
Rating: Summary: Brings Things You Already Know To a Conscious Level Review: I love self help books and read a lot of them but "Using your brain..."by R.Bandler is the best I ever try. It's very useful, easy to read, easy to fallow and a lot of fun. And the best is it really works. I'm recomending it since to everyone who needs help this of a kind and helping people myself using his technics. More that that I got so interested in NLP so took a few course myself and got a certificate. Highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Richard Bandlers book is hypnotizing! Review: Richard Bandler, known for his development of Neuro Lingustic Programming with fellow partner John Grinder, has stepped alone to write this wonderfully self theraputic style book, from his uses and experiences in NLP and hypnosis training from master Milton Erickson. There is nothing your brain cannot accomplish, and Bandler provides the steps to take you to levels of brain development that you have not begun to think about...yet. In Using Your Barin for a Change, you are now in control of what you think, and how you think of life, concentrating all of your past miseries into one moment and then having it disappear to refocus your energy into the moment which we call the 'now'. A powerful book for anyone looking to change the way they see reality
